MATERIALS BERNAT BERELLA SPORTSPUN (2 oz. balls) — 1 each Main Color (MC), Color A and Color B for Beret — 2 each Main Color (MC), Color A and Color B for Scarf 1 BERNAT-Aero crochet hook Size G (Canadian Wool Crochet Hook No. 9) OR ANY SIZE HOOK THAT WILL GIVE THE STITCH GAUGE GIVEN BELOW GAUGE: 4 sts = 1 inch; 5 rows or rounds dc = 2 inches
Pattern Stitch
PATTERN STITCH Round or Row 1: Working in dc, alternate colors as follows: 4 MC, 4 Color A.
Round or Row 2: Working in dc, alternate colors as follows: 4 Color A, 4 Color B.
Round or Row 3: Using Color A, 1 sc in each sc.
Round or Row 4: Using Color B, 1 sc in each sc.
Round or Row 5: Using MC, 1 sc in each sc. Repeat these 5 rounds or rows for pattern stitch.
NOTE 1: When changing colors, always draw new color through last loop on hook.
NOTE 2: Carry color last used along top of next sts and work dc over this yarn into 2 loops of sts of previous row.
NOTE 3: Always count ch 3 as first dc.
Beret
BERET Using MC, ch 4, join with sl st to form a ring. Round 1: Ch 3, 2 dc into ring; using Color A, 3 dc into ring; using MC, 3 dc into ring; using Color A, 3 dc into ring; join with sl st to top of ch 3 — 12 sts.
Round 2: Using Color B, ch 3, 1 dc in same st, 2 dc in next st; * using Color A, 2 dc in each of next 2 sts; using Color B, 2 dc in each of next 2 sts, repeat from * around, join — 24 sts.
Round 3: Work Round 1 of pattern st, inc 2 sts in each st — 48 sts.
Round 4: Work Round 2 of pattern st on 48 sts.
Round 5: Using Color A and working in BACK LOOP ONLY, ch 1, 1 sc in each of next 2 sts, * 2 sc in next st, 1 sc in each of next 3 sts, repeat from * around, join — 60 sts.
Round 6: Using Color B and working in BACK LOOP ONLY, work even in sc, join.
Round 7: Using MC, repeat Round 6.
Round 8: Work Round 1 of pattern st as follows. Ch 3, 2 dc in next st, 1 dc in next st, * 1 dc in each of next 5 sts, 2 dc in next st, repeat from * around — 80 sts.
Round 9: Work Round 2 of pattern st on 80 sts.
Round 10: Using Color A and working in BACK LOOP ONLY, ch 1, 1 sc in next st, * 2 sc in next st, 1 sc in each of next 2 sts, repeat from * around, join.
Round 11: Repeat Round 6.
Round 12: Repeat Round 7, inc 2 sts at end of round — 108 sts.
Round 13: Repeat Round 8.
Round 14: Repeat Round 9.
Round 15: Using Color A, repeat Round 6.
Round 16: Repeat Round 6.
Round 17: Repeat Round 7. Break off Colors A and B.
Round 18: Using MC, ch 3, 1 dc in each of next 10 sts, * skip 1 st, 1 dc in each of next 11 sts, repeat from *, ending skip 1 st, join.
Round 19: Ch 3, 1 dc in each of next 9 sts, * skip 1 st, 1 dc in each of next 10 sts, repeat from *, ending skip 1 st, join. Continue in this manner to dec 4 sts every round twice more. Break off MC, join Color A and work even in sc. Break off Color A, join Color B and work even in sc. Then working from LEFT TO RIGHT work 1 sc in each sc. Fasten off. Using Color B make a pompon and sew to center of beret.
Scarf
SCARF Using MC, ch 47 sts. Row 1: 1 sc in 4th st from hook and in each st to end of row, ch 3, turn.
Row 2: Skip first dc, 1 dc in each dc and in top of turning ch, ch 3, turn — 44 dc.
Repeat Row 2 until piece measures 32 inches. * Repeat pattern st twice. Using MC, work 4 rows dc. Repeat pattern st twice. Using MC, work 1 row dc. Working in starting ch, repeat from * across other short edge.
FRINGE: Cut strands of Color B 12 inches long. Knot 1 strand in every other st across each short end of scarf.
