A maple-leaf luncheon set of filet-mesh leaf mats with stems and grape clusters, published in Star #45 and Star #208 versions.

Star 45 Mesh Notes

Open Mesh

When worked on a chain work 1st dc in 8th ch from hook, * ch 2, skip 2 sts, 1 dc in next st, repeat from *. Succeeding rows, ch 5 to turn and dc in dc, * ch 2, dc in next dc, repeat from *.

Solid Mesh

Four dc form a solid mesh and 3 dc are required for each additional solid mesh. To increase a solid mesh at end of row work a tr c in lower loop of last dc, work 2 more tr c working each into lower loop of previous st.

Star 45 Leaf

Begin

Begin work at A, ch 18, work 1st dc in 4th st from hook and 1 dc in each remaining st.

Work

Work back and forth according to diagram to arrow, then begin at B and work to correspond. Ch 11 on A and join to B at top of stem opening. Continue work across both sides following diagram.

Sew

Sew leaf together where the two sections meet. The 2nd leaf in center scarf work into 1st row of 1st leaf and work to correspond.

Star 45 Stem

Stem — Single leaf

In single leaf, join thread in 5th dc of stem opening and work 1 sc in each of the next 4 sts, ch 1, turn and continue in sc until stem measures 2½ inches, dc into 3rd row of leaf, work 3 more rows of sc, then dc in 3rd row of other side of leaf, continue until stem measures 6½ inches and sew to lower edge of leaf as illustrated.

Stem — Center Scarf

Begin in same manner and work until stem is long enough to join into the 2nd and 3rd row of opposite leaf. Work a 2nd stem to correspond.

Grapes

Foundation

Ch 3, 7 sc into 1st st, join.

2nd Row

2 sc in each st.

3rd Row

* 2 sc in 1st st, 1 sc in next st, repeat from * all around. Repeat 3rd row until work measures 1 inch in diameter.

Assembly

Work 8 more Grapes sewing them together and to leaves as illustrated, then work 9 Grapes for other side of scarf.

Star 208 Notes

NOTE

4 dc form a solid mesh and 3 dc are required for each additional solid mesh. For 1 open mesh, ch 2, skip 2 dc, dc in next dc.

Star 208 Leaf

1st HALF OF LEAF — Foundation

Starting at lower edge A, ch 18, dc in 4th st from hook, 1 dc in each of the next 14 sts of ch, ch 8, turn.

2nd ROW

Dc in 4th st from hook, 1 dc in each of the next 4 sts of ch, 1 dc in each of the next 15 sts, tr c in 3rd st of ch, then work 9 more tr c's always working each tr c in lower loop of previous tr c (3 solid meshes increased), ch 11, turn.

3rd ROW

Dc in 4th st from hook, 1 dc in each of the next 7 sts of ch, 1 dc in each st across row to within last st, tr c in last st, work 3 more tr c's always working each tr c in lower loop of previous tr c (1 solid mesh increased), ch 5, turn.

4th ROW

Dc in 4th st from hook, dc in next st of ch, 1 dc in each remaining st, turn.

5th ROW

Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), 1 dc in each of the next 9 dc, ch 2, skip 2 dc, 1 dc in each remaining dc, ch 5, turn.

Through 15th row

Work back and forth following chart until 15 rows are completed, ch 11, drop thread.

OPPOSITE LOWER HALF OF LEAF

With a separate ball of thread and starting at lower half B, ch 18 and work 14 rows according to opposite lower half of chart, cut thread. Pick up 1st section and finish 15th row of 2nd half to correspond. Work back and forth according to chart until leaf is completed, cut thread. Sew leaf together from the 6th through the 10th row at center.

Star 208 Stem

Foundation

Attach thread in 5th st of ch 11 of 15th row and working toward lower edge of leaf, work 1 sc in each of the next 4 sts, ch 1, turn.

2nd ROW

1 sc in each of the 4 sc, ch 1, turn. Repeat 2nd row until stem measures 2½ inches, dc in 3rd row of leaf, work 3 more rows of sc, then dc in 3rd row of opposite side of leaf, continue working in sc until stem measures 6½ inches, cut thread and sew to lower edge of leaf as illustrated. Work 3 more mats in same manner.
