Tassel and Cord Pattern #304A (or #908)

here are slight variations to materials and instructions between these versions of the same pattern in different publications. Versions are below.

Tassel and Cord Pattern #304A from Spool Cotton #34, Crochet Designs For The Hostess.

These can be made of Clark's O.N.T. or J. & P. Coats Mercerized Crochet in Size 5 to 10. Curtain pulls are usually made in White or Ecru, but if you wish to make tassels for other decorative purposes, you will find interesting colors from which to choose in Size 10. Use a Milward's steel crochet hook No. 7, 8 or 9. A board 15x 4x 1 inches with a 2-inch nail ½ inch from end is useful to wind your tassel on. If not convenient, a book will serve.

CAP. Ch 4, join in ring, 6 sc in ring. Make 2 sc in each st until 20 sc are made, then 1 sc in each st until 12 rnds are completed.

TASSEL. Wind cotton 130 times over a 4½-inch cardboard.

CORD. Take 2 lengths of cotton 65 inches long, crochet ch of 4 inches in center of one length, tie second length on first one just below the chain, slip chain over one nail, and fasten the four threads around the nail at the other end of board. Take a 4½-yd. length of cord, tie around the foundation on the board at the end of the chain, having 2½ yds. on each side, then start to tie the knots.

Take the thread at the left, pass over the center threads forming a loop; take the thread at the right side, pass it over the first thread and under the center threads, and up through the loop at the left side, draw it tight. Then take the right-hand thread, pass it over the center threads, forming a loop. Take the left-hand thread, pass it over this, under the center thread and up through the loop at the right side, draw tight to meet the first part of the knot. Repeat for 2 inches. To make the twist, work from one side only—that is, always make the loop at the left side. The plain part is 2 inches, the twist is

1½ inches. Repeat, having 3 sections of plain and 2 of the twisted. Take off board and tie around the top of the tassel. Slip cap over and sew to stem.

These attractive decorative articles are made of Clark's O.N.T. or J. & P. Coats Mercerized Crochet, size 3, 5 or 10. White and Ecru are most popularly used for curtain pulls, and when used for other purposes there is an array of gay colors in size 10 from which to choose. Use Milward's steel crochet hook No. 7, 8 or 9.

When heavy effects are desired, choose Clark's O.N.T. Cronita or Knitting and Crochet Cotton; or J. & P. Coats Knit-Cro-Sheen or Crochet Cord.

Knotted Cord: This can be conveniently made on a narrow board about 12 inches long, with nails in about ½ inch from each end. Measure off 2 lengths of thread about 2 yards long. Make loop near center of one strand,

and crochet a ch of 4 inches. Make a ring of this ch and tie the center of the other strand at the base of the ch-ring. This makes 4 strands of thread over which knots are made.

Put ch-ring over one of the nails and fasten the 4 strands firmly around the other nail. Measure off a 4½ yard length of thread and tie the center at the base of the ch-ring (having 2½ yards on each side with which to tie knots). * Put the left thread loosely over the 4-center strands, making a loop at the left. Then pass the right thread over this thread, under the center strands and up through loop at left, and draw up tightly. Complete the knot by doing the same thing with the thread at the right (that is, put the right thread over the center strands, making a loop at the right. Then pass the left thread over this thread, under the center strands, and up through loop at the right, and draw up tightly.) Repeat from * for 2 inches. Then make the twist by working with loops at the left only. Work the twist for 1½ inches, then continue as before, making 3 sections plain and 2 twisted. Take off board and tie around top of tassel. Slip cap over and sew to stem.

Required yardage is specified for each design.

Choose one of the following threads in size 5: Clark's O.N.T. Mercerized Crochet. J. & P. Coats Mercerized Crochet. J. & P. Coats Big Ball Best Six Cord Mercerized Crochet. Clark's Big Ball Mercerized Crochet.

Materials: About 50 yds are required for 1 curtain pull. Milward's steel crochet hook No. 5 or 6.

Tassel. Cut a cardboard 4½ inches wide and 6 inches long. Cut a piece of thread 12 inches long and place it across the length of cardboard. Then wind thread around the width of cardboard about 130 times. Break off. Pick up both ends of the 12-inch long thread and tie securely. Slip tassel off cardboard and wind thread several times around near top and tie securely. Break off.

Cord. This can be conveniently made on a narrow board about 12 inches long, with nails about ½ inch in from each end. Measure off 2 lengths of thread, each about 2 yards long. Make a loop at center of one strand and work a chain of 4 inches. Sl st to 1st ch st made and draw thread through. Tie the center of the other strand at the joining of the ch-ring. This makes 4 strands of thread over which knots are to be made. Put ch-ring over one of the nails and fasten the 4 strands firmly around the other nail. Measure off a 4½-yard length of thread and tie the center at the joining of the ch-ring (having 2½ yards on each side with which to tie knots). * Put the left thread loosely

across, over the 4 center strands, making a loop at the left. Then pass the right thread over this thread, under the center strands and up through loop at left, and draw up both ends tightly. Complete the knot by doing the same thing with the thread at the right (that is, put the right thread across, over the center strands, making a loop at the right; then pass the left thread over this thread, under the center strands, and up through loop at the right, and draw up tightly as before). Repeat from * for 2 inches. Then make the twist by working with loops at the left only. Work the twist for 12 inches, then continue as before, making 3 sections plain and 2 twisted. Take cord off board and fasten cord to tassel.

Cap. Ch 4, join with sl st to form ring, 6 sc in ring. Make 2 sc in each st until 20 sc are made, then 1 sc in each st until 12 rnds are completed. Break off. Slip cap over cord and draw down over top of tassel.
