Border Place Mats Pattern
Striped border place mats in Star Fast Heavy Crochet with post-stitch chocolate bands. Set of 4 mats, each about 11½ x 17½ inches. Originally published in Crocheted Fashions, Book No. 116.

Materials Required: AMERICAN THREAD COMPANY "STAR" FAST HEAVY CROCHET MERCERIZED COTTON , Article 140 12 balls White. 3 balls Chocolate or colors of your choice are required for 4 Mats. Steel crochet hook No. 1 and No. 0. Each Mat measures inches 11½ x 17½ inches.
Place Mat
With No. 0 hook and with Chocolate ch 64, sc in 2nd st from hook, 1 sc in each remaining st of ch, turn (right side of work).
Ch 1, 1 sc in each sc, cut Chocolate. Attach White (when changing color always complete last half of last st worked with next color), turn.
Ch 1, 1 sc in each sc, turn.
Ch 1, 1 sc in each sc, turn. Cut White at end of last row.
Attach Chocolate, ch 1, 1 sc in each of the next 3 sc, * trc around corresponding sc of last Chocolate row worked by inserting hook horizontally under the sc (post st made), skip 1 sc, 1 sc in each of the next 7 sc, repeat from * 6 times, post st around corresponding sc of last Chocolate row worked, skip 1 sc, 1 sc in each of the next 3 sc, turn.
Ch 1, 1 sc in each st, turn, cut Chocolate.
With White, ch 1, 1 sc in each sc, cut White.
With Chocolate, ch 1, * 1 sc in each of the next 7 sc, trc around corresponding sc of last Chocolate row worked, skip 1 sc, repeat from * 6 times, skip 1 sc, 1 sc in each of the next 7 sc, turn.
Same as 2nd row.
With White, ch 1, 1 sc in each sc, turn. Repeat last row until work measures 15 inches from beginning ending on wrong side, cut White.
With Chocolate, 1 sc in each sc, turn, cut Chocolate.
With White, 1 sc in each sc, turn, cut White.
Same as 13th and 14th rows.
With White, 1 sc in each sc, turn, cut White.
Same as 7th and 8th rows.
Edge
With right side of work toward you, attach Chocolate at beginning of last row and with No. 1 hook, work 1 sl st in each row across long side, ch 1, turn. 2nd Row. 1 sc in each sl st, ch 1, turn. 3rd Row. 1 sc in each sc, cut thread. Finish opposite side in same manner, do not cut thread. Working across last row of short side, work 1 sl st in each sc, cut thread.
