MATERIALS BERNAT BERELLA GERMANTOWN (2 oz. balls) — 1 each Main Color (MC) and Contrasting Color (CC) for Beret — 1 each Main Color (MC) and Contrasting Color (CC) for Scarf 1 BERNAT-Aero crochet hook Size J (Canadian Wool Crochet Hook No. 6) OR ANY SIZE HOOK THAT WILL GIVE THE STITCH GAUGE GIVEN BELOW GAUGE: 7 sc = 2 inches; 9 rows = 2 inches NOTE: To make long dc, work a loose dc through 3 rows directly below.
Beret
BERET Starting at center top and using MC, ch 2. Round 1: Work 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook.
Round 2: 2 sc in each st — 12 sts.
Round 3: * 1 sc in next st, 2 sc in next st, repeat from * 5 times more — 18 sts.
Round 4: Using CC, * 2 sc in next st, 1 sc in each of next 2 sts, repeat from * 5 times more — 24 sts.
Round 5: Using CC, * 1 sc in each of next 3 sts, 2 sc in next st, repeat from * 5 times more — 30 sts.
Round 6: Using CC, * 1 sc in each of next 4 sts, 2 sc in next st, repeat from * 5 times more — 36 sts.
Round 7: Using MC, * work 1 long dc, 1 sc in each of next 6 sts, repeat from * 5 times more — 42 sts.

Rounds 14 and 15: Using MC, work in sc, inc 6 sts in same manner as before on each round — 96 sts.
Using CC, work in same manner as Round 13, having 1 st more between long dc sts — 108 sts.
Rounds 17 and 18: Using CC, work in sc, inc 6 sts in same manner as before on each round — 120 sts.
Round 19: Using MC, work 1 long dc st between dc sts of previous pattern and, AT THE SAME TIME, dec 12 sts at even intervals.
Rounds 20 and 21: Using MC, work in sc, dec 6 sts at even intervals — 108 sts.
Rounds 22, 23 and 24: Using CC, repeat Rounds 19 through 21.
Rounds 25, 26 and 27: Using MC, repeat Rounds 19 through 21.
Rounds 28, 29 and 30: Repeat Rounds 22 through 24.
Rounds 31, 32 and 33: Repeat Rounds 25 through 27. Fasten off.
FINISHING: Using both colors, make a pompon and sew to center top.
Scarf
SCARF Using MC, ch 33 sts. Row 1: 1 sc in 2nd st from hook, 1 sc in each st to end of ch — 32 sc.
Row 2: Ch 1, turn, 1 sc in each sc.
Rows 3 and 4: Repeat Row 2. Break off MC. Join CC through loop on hook.
Row 5: Using CC, ch 1, turn, * 1 sc in each of 6 sc, 1 long dc, repeat from * 3 times more, 1 sc in each of last 6 sc.
Rows 6, 7 and 8: Repeat Row 2. Break off CC. Join MC through loop on hook.
Row 9: Ch 1, turn, 1 sc in each of 3 sc, * 1 long dc, 1 sc in each of 6 sc, repeat from *, ending 1 long dc, 1 sc in each of last 2 sc.
Rows 10, 11 and 12: Repeat Row 2. Repeat Rows 5 through 12 until there are 23 MC stripes. Fasten off.
FINISHING: FRINGE: Cut strands of yarn 12 inches long. Using 3 strands each of MC and CC, knot in every 3rd st across each short edge. Trim cut ends. Steam.
