Intermediate Hook No. 5 Gloves

Sport gloves for driving, golf, riding and other sports; each finger crocheted separately then joined, with palm, sewn-in thumb, and flare cuff. Sized 5½″ to 6½″ with larger-size variations. Originally published in Spool Cotton #29, Fashions Crochet and Knitting; also Spool Cotton #35 and #66.

Introduction

For driving, golf, riding and other sports, these gloves are a wardrobe essential. Instructions are given for size 5½″ to 6½″. For larger sizes see further instructions at the end. Each finger is crocheted separately, then joined together, and the palm crocheted. The thumb is crocheted and then sewed in the opening.

Forefinger Middle Ring

Foundation

FOREFINGER, MIDDLE FINGER, and RING FINGER. To begin, ch 3, join with sl st to form ring.

1st rnd

Ch 2, 7 dc in ring. Do not join, but continue as spiral.

2nd rnd

Ch 1, dc in ch-2 of 1st rnd, * ch 1, dc in next dc, repeat from * 7 times (8 sps).

3rd rnd

Dc in 1st sp, dc in dc, * dc in next sp, dc in dc, and repeat from * 7 times (16 dc).

4th rnd

Dc in each dc in rnd (16 dc).

5th rnd

* Ch 1, skip 1 dc, dc in next, and repeat from * 7 times (8 sps). Repeat rnds 3, 4, and 5 through 11th rnd. Fasten off thread.

Little Finger

Little Finger

LITTLE FINGER. Ch 3, sl st to form ring. 1st rnd: Ch 2, 7 dc in ring, and continue the spiral as for forefinger, except that there will be only 7 sps or 14 dc in rnds. At end of 8th rnd, fasten off thread.

Thumb

Foundation through 8th rnd

THUMB. Ch 3, sl st to form ring. Ch 2, 8 dc in ring. Ch 1, 1 dc under ch-2, ch 1, 1 dc in dc, and continue the spiral as for other fingers, making 9 sps or 18 dc in rnds through the 8th rnd. At the end of the 8th rnd do not continue the spiral, but ch 2 and turn to leave opening for attaching to palm, working as follows:—

9th row

* Dc in sp, dc in dc, and repeat from * across (18 dc, counting first ch-2 as 1 dc), turn.

10th row

Sl st 1, ch 2, dc in each dc across row to next to last dc, turn. (16 dc, counting ch-2 as 1 dc.)

11th row

Sl st 1, ch 3, * skip 1 dc, dc in next, ch 1, and repeat from * across (6 sps), turn.

12th row

Sl st 1, ch 2, * 1 dc in dc, 1 dc in sp, and repeat from * across (10 dc).

13th row

Sl st 1, ch 2, dc in dc across (7 dc, counting ch-2 as 1 dc).

14th row

Sl st 1, ch 3, skip 1 dc, dc in next dc, ch 1, skip 1 dc, dc in next dc (2 sps). Fasten off thread and lay thumb aside.

Palm

Join fingers

PALM. Lay fingers in order. Fasten two meshes of little finger to two meshes of ring finger with over and over stitches. Sew other fingers together in same way. Fasten thread to sp on outside edge of forefinger.

1st rnd

Ch 2, * dc in sp, dc in dc, and repeat from * around palm, taking an extra dc in double dc at joining between two fingers. Do not join, but continue in spiral.

2nd rnd

Dc in ch-2, dc in each dc around palm.

3rd rnd

Dc in 1st dc, * ch 1, skip 1 dc, dc in next, repeat from * around palm.

4th rnd

* Dc in sp, dc in dc, and repeat from * around. Continue pattern through 6th rnd, then turn and crochet pattern back and forth to make opening for thumb. Always ch 2 to turn, to count as 1 dc. Work until 12th row is completed. Fasten off thread. Insert thumb in palm opening, matching design and sew in place with over and over stitches from wrong side. Fasten thread on forefinger side of palm, ch 2, 1 dc in each dc, and dc in each mesh. Work around as a spiral, following design of glove, till entire palm has 19 rnds, ending at little finger side of wrist. Do not break off.

Flare Cuff

Foundation rows

FLARE CUFF. Ch 2, turn, 1 dc in each dc, and work across, ch 2, turn. Work 3 more rows of dc in dc.

5th row

Ch 2, dc in dc to center point of cuff over thumb, then make 2 dc in same dc. Continue across with dc in dc, ch 2, turn. Repeat 5th row till flare is as deep as desired.

Larger Sizes

Size note

For size 7 or larger, make fingers larger by chaining 4 to form ring.

Forefinger, Middle, and Ring Fingers

FOREFINGER, MIDDLE, AND RING FINGERS. 8 dc in ring. Rnds should have 9 sps or 18 dc, and work through 14th rnd.

Little Finger

LITTLE FINGER. 7 dc in ring, with 8 sps or 16 dc in rnds. Work through 11th rnd.

Thumb

THUMB. 9 dc in ring with 10 sps or 20 dc to the rnd. Work through 11th rnd, then discontinue spiral and decrease 1 st on each side of thumb until 2 or 3 sps are left.

Palm

PALM. Work 9 rnds, then turn for thumb opening and continue back and forth through 15th row. For details follow foregoing directions. Wash finished glove, dry flat, and when thoroughly dry, insert hand carefully to stretch to your size.
