Materials: J. & P. Coats Knit-Cro-Sheen, or Clark's O.N.T. Cronita, 1 ball each of color 9 Yellow and 106 Sport Green and 2 balls of 150 Seal Brown. Milward's steel crochet hook No. 8.
Body
With Brown, ch 92, turn. 1st row: Dc in 4th ch from hook, and in every ch to end (90 dc).
2nd and subsequent rows: 1 sc in every dc of previous row, ch 3, turn. Work 1 row of dc, and 1 row of sc alternately, turning with ch 1 at end of dc row, and ch 3 at end of sc row, until work measures 4½ inches, ending with a dc row, ch 1, turn.
To Shape Neckline
To Shape Neckline. 1 sc in each of 34 dc, 1 sl st in each of next 4 dc, ch 1, turn.
2nd row: Sl st in each of next 4 sl sts, 1 sc in each of next 4 sc, 1 dc in each of next 28 sc, 2 dc in each of last 2 sc, ch 1, turn.
3rd row: 1 sc in each of 30 dc, 1 sl st, ch 1, turn.
4th row: 1 sc in each of next 2 sc, 1 dc in each of next 27 sc, 2 dc in each of last 2 sc, ch 1, turn.
5th row: 1 sc in each of 29 dc, 1 sl st, ch 1, turn.
6th row: Sl st in each of 2 sts, ch 2, 1 dc in same sc as ch-2 was made, 1 dc in each sc to end of row, ch 1, turn.
7th row: 1 sc in each dc, decreasing 1 st at neck edge. (To decrease, work last 2 sc together.) Ch 3, turn.
8th row: 1 dc in each sc to end of row, ch 1, turn.
Repeat last 2 rows 3 more times.
15th row: 1 sc in each dc, 1 decrease at neck edge, ch 3, turn.
16th row: 1 dc in each sc, 2 dc in last sc, ch 1, turn.
17th row: Same as 15th row.
18th row: 1 dc in each sc, ch 1, turn.
19th row: Same as 15th row.
20th row: 1 dc in each sc, 2 dc in last sc, ch 1, turn.
21st row: 1 sc in each sc, ch 3, turn.
22nd row: Same as 20th row.
23rd row: Same as 21st row.
24th row: 1 dc in each sc, ch 1, turn.
25th row: 1 sc in each sc making 1 decrease at neck edge, ch 3, turn.
26th row: 1 dc in each sc, 2 dc in last sc, ch 1, turn.
27th to 38th rows incl: Repeat 21st and 26th rows alternately, then work 1 row of sc, ch 6, turn. Make 2 tr tr in each sc across. Break off and work Cross Stitch ends of scarf as follows:
Cross Stitch
1st row of Cross Stitch: Attach Yellow, ch 3, turn. Dc in next tr tr, ch 5, 1 dc on top of dc just made, ch 1 and make across st as follows: * Thread over hook twice, insert hook in next st and draw thread through as for a tr (4 loops on hook), thread over, and draw through 2 loops, thread over, skip 1 st, insert hook in next st, draw thread through (5 loops on hook), thread over and draw off 2 loops at a time 4 times, ch 2, 1 dc in the center point of the cross, thus completing the cross. Ch 1, and repeat from * across, ending row with a complete cross. Break off.
2nd row of Cross Stitch: Attach Green, ch 3, skip the 2 ch sts of the first cross, 1 dc in next dc of same cross, ch 5, 1 dc on top of dc just made, ch 1, * thread over hook twice, insert hook in leg of next cross st and draw thread through as for a tr (4 loops on hook), thread over, and draw through 2 loops, thread over, insert hook in next leg of same cross st, draw thread through (5 loops on hook), thread over and draw off 2 loops at a time 4 times, ch 2, 1 dc in center point of the cross, ch 1 and repeat from * across, ending with a complete cross. Break off.
3rd row of Cross Stitch: Attach Brown and work as for 2nd row.
4th row: Attach Yellow and work as for 2nd row.
5th to 24th rows incl: Work as for 2nd row repeating the colors in the following order: Sport Green, Seal Brown and Yellow.
Finishing
Work other side of collar to correspond.
To straighten out the irregularities at neck edge on collar, work a row of sc with Brown.
