Shade Covering

Note

A white lamp shade is particularly smart, made with Mercerized Crochet as the tight twist of the thread and the sheen give it an elegant but tailored appearance. A trimming edge in color size 30 Mercerized Crochet may be used to carry out the color scheme in the room. 3 balls are required for the covering and trimming edges of a shade 5 inches across the bottom by 4½ inches deep. 1 ball of the Knitting and Crochet cotton or 3 balls of Crochet Cord will make a shade 8 inches across by 5½ inches deep.

Covering

First tie the end of thread over the wire and wind the supporting wires, passing the ball of thread round and round so that the thread lies flat and close. Instead of winding the frame, it can also be covered by working a series of single crochet stitches over the wire.

Winding

Having covered the supporting wires, then fasten the thread with a slip knot to the bottom wire of the frame and wind the entire frame. Pass the ball of thread, through the top and over the bottom wire, thus winding over and over. Keep the threads drawn tightly and pushed well together. A slip knot can be used for finishing one thread and starting a new one.

Finishing covering

If the shade is too small to allow the ball to pass through, wind some of the cotton into a smaller ball. When the frame is completely covered, fasten off the thread securely.

Trimming Edge
