Mending Compact Pattern #4818

Materials Required— AMERICAN THREAD COMPANY "STAR" PEARL COTTON, ARTICLE 90, SIZE 5 2—50 yd. Balls Nile Green or any Color desired or 1—1 oz. Ball of "DAWN" Worsted Floss, Article W16. 6 yds. of Contrasting Color for Flowers. 1 Small Button. Steel Crochet Hook No. 4 or No. 5. Use 2 strands of thread for "STAR" Pearl Cotton or 1 strand for "DAWN" Worsted Floss.

Holder. Ch 3, 1 sdc in 1st st of ch, (s dc: thread over, insert needle in st, pull loop through, thread over and pull through all loops on needle) join each round and ch 2 to start each round, the ch 2 counts as 1 sdc.

2nd Round. 2 sdc in each sdc.

3rd Round. 1 sdc in same space with ch 2, * 1 sdc in next sdc, 2 sdc in next sdc, repeat from * all around, 1 sdc in last sdc.

4th Round. 1 sdc in same space with joining, * 1 sdc in each of the next 2 sdc, 2 sdc in next sdc, repeat from * all around, 1 sdc in each of the last 2 sdc.

Next 7 Rounds. 1 sdc in each sdc, then work 1 round of sc even, break thread.

Cover. Work the 1st 6 rounds the same as holder.

7th Round. * Ch 3, thread over, insert needle in same space with ch 3, pull loop through, thread over, insert needle in same space, pull loop through, thread over, insert needle in same space, pull loop through, thread over and pull through all loops but 1 on needle, thread over and pull through remaining loops, skip 2 s dc, sc in next s dc, repeat from * all around, break thread.

Flowers. Work with 1 strand of thread, using contrasting Color, ch 3, 3 sc in 1st st of ch, 8 dc in same space, 3 sc in same space, join to 1st sc at opposite side, break thread leaving about a 3 inch length. Work 4 more flowers in same manner, then work 2 from single thread of main Color.

Cut a piece of felt or any material to fit inside cover for needles. Draw the 3 inch flower ends through the center of cover, threading 4 of them, and draw through cover and felt about 1/4 inch from center, thread the remainder and draw them through the felt about 1/4 inch from opposite side of center. Tie the two sections of thread in a knot, trim.

Button Hole. With 2 strands of thread, ch 9, join, ch 1 and work 1 sc in each st of ch, break thread leaving a length long enough to thread needle and sew to inside of cover at 6th round. Attach cover to holder and sew button in position.
