Advanced Hook No. 3 Wall Plaque

Pair of black crocheted butterfly wall plaques worked over millinery wire in Lily Double Quick, with body, head, top and lower wings, and decorative circles. Originally published in Lily Book 74, Wrought Iron Crochet.

Mr. Butterfly Body Back Piece

Size note

MR. BUTTERFLY (Size—11 1/2 x 10 1/2 inches):

Foundation

Ch 5, 4 dc in 5th ch from hook.

ROW 2

Ch 3, turn, dc in each dc, dc in end ch-3 (1 dc inc).

Note

Repeat Row 2 twice.

ROW 5

Ch 3, turn, sk 1st dc, holding back the last lp of each dc on hook, make dc in next 2 dc, YO and draw thru all 3 lps on hook (2-dc Cluster made), dc in next dc, dc in next 2 dc made into a Cluster, dc in next 2 sts.

ROW 6

Ch 3, turn, sk 1st dc, dc in next dc, dc in next 2 dc made into a Cluster, dc in next 2 sts.

ROWS 7 through 9

Repeat Row 2 three times.

ROW 10

Ch 3, turn, sk 1st dc, (dc in next 2 dc made into a Cluster) 3 times, dc in end st.

ROW 11

Ch 1, turn, (sk 1 dc, sc in next dc) twice. Fasten off.

Mr. Butterfly Head

Foundation

Ch 6, join with sl st to form ring.

RND 1

Ch 1, 10 sc in ring, join.

RND 2

Ch 1, 12 sc over 1st Rnd, inserting hook in center opening; join. * Make a 4 inch chain. Cut wire 8 1/2 inches long, fold one end over 1/2 inch, sl st in folded end, ch 1, hold wire along chain, sc over wire into each ch st; sl st in next sc on Head; repeat from *. Fasten off. Sew Head to top of Front Piece. Tape wire ends tog. and sew on back of Body.

Mr. Butterfly Top Wing

Note

(Make 2): Cut wire 16 1/2 inches long.

CROCHETED ROPE

Ch 2, 4 sc in 2d ch from hook. Cup circle right-side-inside and working in back lp only, sc in 1st sc, sc in each sc around and around for 1/2 inch, push wire thru Rope and out past starting end 1/2 inch. Continue making Rope outside of wire to 1/2 inch from end, always with 4 sc in a rnd. Sk 2 sc, sl st in next sc. Fasten off. Bend Rope sharply 6 1/2 inches from one end (top corner), and 4 1/2 inches from other end (lower corner). Bend wire ends straight across Body, lap ends from 2 Wings, wrap with gummed tape and sew on top of Back Piece 1 inch apart.

Mr. Butterfly Large Circle

Foundation

Ch 7, join with sl st to form ring.

RND 1

Ch 1, 15 sc in ring; join.

RND 2

Ch 10, sk 2 sc, dc in next sc, (ch 7, sk 2 sc, dc in next sc) 3 times, ch 7, join to 3d st of ch-10.

RND 3

Ch 1, sc in same st, (8 sc in next sp, sc in next dc) repeated around; join, make 4 1/2 inch chain, * sk 1 ch, sl st in each remaining ch, sl st in Circle. Fasten off. Make 2. Sew chain end to Body. * Sew a Circle in upper corner of each Wing.

Mr. Butterfly Small Circle

Foundation

Ch 10, join with sl st to form ring. Ch 1, 18 sc in ring; join, make 4 1/2 inch chain, repeat Rnd 3 from * to * Sew a Circle in lower corner of each Wing.

Mr. Butterfly Lower Wing

Note

(Make 2): Cut wire 13 1/2 inches long and cover as for Top Wing. Fold Rope 5 inches from Body end; bend each Rope out sharply 2 inches from fold (tail made), curve long end around, run wire end into rope of Top Wing 3 1/2 inches from Body and sew securely. Bend other end to go across Body. Tape wire ends of both wings tog. and sew on Body. Make a Large Circle; chain 1 1/2 inches, sk 1 ch, sl st in each remaining ch, sl st in Circle. Fasten off. Sew chain end to Body. Make 3 Small Circles. Sew one at top of tail and to 4th sp on Large Circle. Sew others to 2d & 3d sps on Large Circle and to edge of Wing. Repeat on 2d Wing. Sew Top Body Piece on Back Piece.

MRS. BUTTERFLY (Size—12 x 10 inches): Repeat 2 Body Pieces and Head.

Mrs. Butterfly Top Wing

Note

(Make 2): Cut wire 17 inches long and cover with Rope as for 1st Butterfly. Bend into an oval with ends 1 inch apart. Join wire ends of both wings and sew on Body.

Mrs. Butterfly Large Circle

Note

Repeat Small Circle.

RND 2

Ch 1, sc in same st with sl st, ch 5, sk 2 sc, dc in next sc, ch 7, sk 2 sc, tr in next sc, (ch 8, sk 1 sc, dtr in next sc) twice, ch 8, sk 1 sc, tr in next sc, ch 7, sk 2 sc, dc in next sc, ch 5, join to 1st sc.

RND 3

Ch 1, sc in same sc, 5 sc in next sp, sc in next st, 8 sc in next sp, sc in next st, (9 sc in next sp, sc in next st) 3 times, 8 sc in next sp, sc in next st, 5 sc in next sp, join. Fasten off. Make 2. Sew one in end of each wing.

Mrs. Butterfly Braid

BRAID

Ch 5, sc in 5th ch from hook, (ch 4, turn, sc in sc) repeated for 4 inches. Fasten off. Sew across Wing in a curve; sew to center sp on Large Circle. Make 2 Small Circles; sew tog.; make a 3d, ch 8, sk 1 ch, sl st in next 7 ch, sl st in circle; sew to 1st two in a straight line; sew 1st Circle to center of Braid; sew chain end to Body. Repeat on 2d Wing.

Mrs. Butterfly Lower Wing

Note

(Make 2): Cut wire 11 1/2 inches long and cover with Rope. Make 2. Bend into an oval with one side twice as long as other. Push short end wire into rope of Top Wing 3 inches from Body and sew securely. Join wire ends of both wings and sew on Body. Make a Large Circle and sew in end of Wing. Make 3 1/2 inch Braid; sew as for Top Wing. Make 1 Small Circle; sew to Braid; make a 2d, ch 5, sk 1 ch, sl st in next 4 ch, sl st in Circle. Fasten off. Sew to 1st Circle; sew chain end to Body. Repeat on 2d Wing. Sew Body Pieces tog.

Finishing

Note

Starch Butterflies, pin right-side-up and leave until dry.
