Picnic Table Set Pattern

Materials Required: AMERICAN THREAD COMPANY "AUNT LYDIA'S" HEAVY RUG YARN 1(5)- 70 yd. skein Moss Color No. 1 1(5) - 70 yd. skein Orange Color No. 2 1(5) - 70 yd. skein Bongo Color No. 3 1(5) - 70 yd. skein Cerise Color No. 4 1(5) - 70 yd. skein Watermelon Color No. 5 Plastic Crochet Hook Size J OR ANY SIZE HOOK WHICH WILL RESULT IN STITCH GAUGE BELOW GAUGE: 3 sc = 1 inch NOTE: 1 skein of each color makes 2 Place Mats 12" x 18". 5 skeins of each color makes 2 Bench Covers 16" x 64". Directions are given for Place Mat. Changes for Bench Cover given in parentheses.
Place Mat
With Color No. 1 (Moss) ch 2, 3 sc in 1st ch, ch 1 to turn all rows working in back loop of sts throughout. 2nd ROW: 2 sc in each of 1st 2 sc, 1 sc in next sc (5 sc). 3rd ROW: 2 sc in each of 1st 2 sc, 1 sc in each remaining st (7 sc). 4th ROW: 2 sc in each of 1st 2 sc, 1 sc in each remaining st, (9 sc), change to Color No. 2 (Orange), (when changing colors always complete last half of last st worked with new color and work previous color under 4 or 5 sc, cut previously color). Work 4 rows of each color of the 5 colors repeating from 1st to 5th color, inc 2 sc at beg of row until there are 25 (41) sc ending with 3rd (5th) stripe. 13th and 14th (21st and 22nd) ROWS: 2 sc in 1st sc, 1 sc in each remaining st (1 inc). 15th and 16th (23rd and 24th ROWS): 2 sc in each of the 1st 2 sc, 1 sc in each remaining st (2 inc). Repeat last 4 rows alternating colors until there are 7 (10) stripes; 49 (71) sc. 29th (41st) ROW: 2 sc in 1st sc, 1 sc in each sc to within last 2 sc, skip 1 sc, 1 sc in last sc; 49 (71) sc. NEXT ROW: Skip 1 sc, 1 sc in each sc working 2 sc in last sc; 49 (71) sc. Repeat last 2 rows until there are 10 (35) stripes or desired length. NEXT ROW: With Moss (or next color) skip 1 sc at beg and end of row (2 dec). NEXT ROW: Repeat last row. NEXT 2 ROWS: Skip 1 sc at end of each row. Repeat last 4 rows until there are 25 (41) sc, then dec 1 sc at beg and end of next 11 (19) rows. NEXT ROW: Skip 1 sc, * insert hook in next sc, pull through, repeat from * once, Y O, pull through all loops, cut yarn. Block to size.
