LACE FOR SKIRT EDGE: Using the rose thread, chain 19 sts, turn; 1 dc in 4th st from hook, * ch 1, skip 2 sts, in next chain make 1 dc, ch 2, 1 dc (shell); repeat from * across ending with a shell in last chain st. Ch 3, turn. 2nd row: * Over ch-2 space make 4 dc; repeat from * across row (5 groups of dc). Ch 5, turn. 3rd row: 1 dc in base of ch-5, * ch 1, in space between the next 2 groups of dc make 1 dc, ch 2, 1 dc; repeat from * across (5 shells). Repeat the last 2 rows until the piece measures 16 inches in all. Break thread. Sew ends together.

ROSETTE FOR HAT: Using the rose thread, make a chain of 8 sts, join with a slip st to form a ring. Work 1 sc, 1 dc, 21 trc, 1 dc, 1 sc into ring. 2nd row: Ch 4, 1 dc in ring (made by ch-8) between 5th and 6th trc, ch 5, 1 dc between 10th and 11th trc, ch 5, 1 dc between 15th and 16th trc, ch 5, 1 dc between the 20th and 21st trc (4 sections). 3rd row: * Over space made by ch-5 in 2nd row, work 1 sc, 1 dc, 13 trc, 1 dc, 1 sc; repeat from * around (4 petals). 4th row: * ch 5, 1 dc in ch-5 of 2nd row between the 7th and 8th trc, ch 5, 1 dc under dc in 2nd row; repeat from * around (8 sections). 5th row: * In space made by ch-5 in 4th row work, 1 sc, 1 dc, 11 trc, 1 dc, 1 sc; repeat from * around (8 petals). Break thread.

UMBRELLA: Starting at the center, and using rose, make a chain of 8 sts, join with a slip st. 1st rd: Ch 4, make 28 trc into ring, join with a slip st. 2nd rd: Ch 4, make 2 trc into each st (56 sts). Join this and every round hereafter. 3rd rd: Ch 4, * 2 trc into next st, 1 trc in each of next 2 sts; repeat from * around. 4th rd: Ch 3, * 2 dc into next st, 1 dc in each of next 2 sts; repeat from * around. Break thread. Make another circle the same way. Finishing umbrella: Cut a 3 inch circle out of cardboard. Place between the two crocheted circles and baste together.

Tie in blue thread and make 1 row of sc into every stitch, working thru both pieces. LOVERS KNOT STITCH TRIM: * Pull up a loop about a ¼-inch on hook, thread over and pull through ch, sc in single loop of st, repeat from * once more; skip 1 st, 1 sc in next st, do this all around edge of umbrella. Break thread and fasten off. Flower to top umbrella: Ch 6, join with a slip st; * into ring make 1 sc, 1 dc, 2 trc, 1 dc, repeat from * 4 times more (5 petals). Slip st into ring. Break thread. Insert wire into umbrella as in illustration.

CAPE: Using the rose thread, chain 35 sts, turn; 1 dc in 7th st from hook, * ch 1, skip 1 chain st, in next st make 1 dc, ch 2, 1 dc (open shell); repeat from * across ending with 1 dc, ch 2, 1 dc in last ch st (15 shells). Ch 3, turn. 2nd row: * Over ch-2 space make 4 dc; repeat from * across row (15 groups). Ch 5, turn. 3rd row: 1 dc in first dc, * ch 1, in space between next 2 groups of dc make 1 dc, ch 2, 1 dc (shell); repeat from * across row, ending with 1 dc, ch 2, 1 dc in top of turning chain on row below (16 shells). Ch 3, turn. 4th row: Repeat 2nd row. Break thread. Tie in blue and make 1 sc in top of each dc. Last row: Make 1 row of lovers Knot trim as on edge of umbrella using every sc (do not skip any sts). Break thread.
