The swagger lines and saddle shoulder give smartness to this coat. The entire coat is made of one strand of Beige and one strand of Sport Green worked together, and work starts at bottom edge.

To begin, ch 396 (to Measure about 69 inches). Add more sts if necessary as this foundation ch shrinks in working up.

Sc in 4th ch from hook, * skip 2 sts, sc in next st, ch 2, sc in same st. Repeat from * along ch. Ch 1, turn.

* Sc under next ch-2 loop, ch 2, sc in same loop. Repeat from * across. Ch 1, turn.

Repeat 2nd row until work measures 4 inches. Work next row for 15 inches then decrease one pattern (this comes in line with the underarm). To decrease, make 1 sc under ch-2 loop of previous row and continue working pattern over next pattern across to within 15 inches of other front edge and decrease one pattern. (This leaves about 24 inches for the back). Decrease in this manner every 10 rows, always making decreases directly over previous decreases to form an underarm line. Continue until work measures 28 inches (thus making 26 decreases).

To make right front continue making patterns over the 1st 28 patterns, make 1 sc in next pattern (this is to decrease), ch 1, turn, make pattern over pattern across, keeping the front edge of work even, ch 1, turn, continue with pattern across and decrease 1 pattern at armhole side by making 1 sc in last pattern. Ch 1, turn and make pattern over next pattern. Decrease in this manner at armhole side for 10 rows, thus decreases 5 patterns. Work even for 6 more inches, then begin to decrease for shoulder line. At every other row for the next 4 inches, decrease at armhole side of work by making 2 sc together in last pattern without the ch-2 between, ch 1, turn, and make pattern over next pattern. Fasten off.

Make left front to correspond.

Skip 4 patterns from front, attach thread in 5th pattern and work across back, decreasing for armhole 1 pattern at each side of back every other row for 2 inches as done for front, then work straight for 6 inches.

Begin to decrease for back shoulder lines as done for front for the next 4 inches.

Begin at bottom. Ch 121 (to measure about 20 inches).

Sc in 4th ch from hook, * skip 2 sts, sc in next st, ch 2, sc in same st. Repeat from * across. Ch 1, turn. (40 patterns.)

* Sc under next ch-2 loop, ch 2, sc in same loop. Repeat from * across, ch 1, turn.

Repeat 2nd row until work measures 2 inches. Then every 2 inches for the next 6 inches decrease 1 pattern on each side (34 patterns) and work straight for 4 inches. Increase 1 pattern on each side of work every 2 inches for 3 times (40 patterns in all). For the next 3 inches increase 1 pattern on each side at every inch. (46 patterns at underarm).

Turn, * sl st over 1st 2 patterns, then make pattern over pattern to within 2 patterns from end of row. Turn, repeat from * for 4 more rows. Decrease 1 pattern by making sc in pattern at end of each row for 17 rows (11 patterns left). Work even for 2 rows.

Work over 5 patterns, sc in next, and work over next 5 patterns, ch 1, turn. Work even for 2 inches. * Then make another decrease over previous decrease and work even for 2 more inches. Repeat from * once. Fasten off.

Make another sleeve.

Ch 50.

Sc in 4th ch from hook, * skip 2 sts, sc in next st, ch 2, sc in same st. Repeat from * across. Ch 1, turn.

* Sc under next ch-2 loop, ch 2, sc in same loop. Repeat from * across. Ch 1, turn.

Repeat 2nd row until work measures 4 inches, then decrease 1 pattern at each end of work. To decrease make sc in last pattern, ch 1, turn, and make pattern over next pattern. * Work for 4 inches and decrease the next row. Repeat from * 2 more times. Work even for 4 more inches. Then make increases on corresponding rows where decreases were made. To increase make 2 patterns instead of 1 at beginning and at end of row.

Work a row of sc closely around each piece, excepting armholes of coat. Whip sleeve seams. Sew sleeves in place, lapping the sleeve edge over the coat armhole. Stitch in place with a row of back sts under the sc edge. Whip collar in place across the back.
