American Modern Potholder Pattern

This holder may be made with any of the American Thread Company products listed below: MATERIAL QUANTITY NEEDLE "STAR" Cotton 1 Skein Ea Steel 00 Yarn Yellow Article 75 Blue and Cream or "STAR" Rug Yarn 1 Skein Ea Steel 00 Article 44 Yellow Blue and Cream

With Yellow ch 39, pick up and pull loop through the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th st from hook leaving all loops on hook, yarn over and pull through all loops, ch 1 (the ch 1 is termed the eye of the star st), * pick up and pull loop through the eye of st just made, side loop of star st, each of the next 2 sts of ch, yarn over and pull through all loops, ch 1, repeat from * across row (18 star sts).

2nd Row. Ch 3, turn, pick up the 2nd and 1st sts of ch, side loop of star st, eye of next star st, yarn over and pull through all loops at one time, ch 1, * pick up eye of star st, side loop of star st just made, top of next star st of previous row, eye of next star st of previous row, yarn over and pull through all loops at one time, ch 1, repeat from * across row.

3rd and 4th Rows. Same as 2nd row, break yarn.

5th Row. Attach Cream, ch 3 and work 1 star st in each of the next 5 star sts, pick up eye of star st just made, side loop of star st just made, top of star st in previous row, drop Cream, pick up Blue, insert hook in eye of next star st, pull through, yarn over and pull through all loops on hook at one time, ch 1 and work 1 star st in each star st across row, ch 3, turn.

6th, 7th and 8th Rows. Continue working in star sts working Blue over Blue and Cream over Cream, changing Colors in same manner and always keeping dropped Colors on same (wrong) side, break both yarns.

9th Row. Attach Blue, ch 3 and work 1 star st in each of the next 12 star sts, with Cream work 1 star st in each remaining star st.

10th, 11th and 12th Rows. Same as 6th, 7th and 8th rows, break yarn.

13th Row. Attach Yellow, ch 3 and work star sts across row.

14th, 15th and 16th Rows. Work even in star sts, break yarn.

UNDER SECTION: With Cream work in star sts having 18 star sts in each row.

With Blue crochet the 2 sections together as follows: attach yarn 3 1/2 inches from lower edge, *ch 3, 3 dc in same space, skip the length of a dc, sl st in next space, repeat from * all around leaving 3 1/2 inches free on 4th side for opening, continue edge around remainder of holder, join, break yarn. Work a row of sc on under section at opening, working 3 sc in corner, break yarn. With Blue cover a bone ring with sc and sew to holder as illustrated.
