Bright Butterflies Motif Pattern #S-906
A two-color butterfly motif worked in tatting-crochet thread, assembled into place mats and an apron with linen backing.

Pattern instructions
Right Wing
Starting at lower edge with China Blue, ch 20. Tr in 8th ch from hook, tr in next ch, ch 2, skip 2 ch, dc in next 2 ch, ch 2, skip 2 ch, sc in next 4 ch; insert hook in next ch, draw loop through, drop China Blue, pick up Chartreuse and draw a loop through, thus changing color. Ch 1, turn.
Sc in next 5 sts, (3 sc in next sp, sc in next 2 sts) twice; 15 sc in next loop; now, working along opposite side of starting chain, (sc in next 2 ch, 3 sc in sp) twice; sc in next 5 ch. Ch 1, turn.
Working in back loop only, sc in next 20 sc, pull loop on hook out to measure 1 inch and drop Chartreuse.
Pick up China Blue at opposite end, draw loop through first sc, sc in same place, sc in next 4 sc, ch 3, skip 3 sc, dc in next 2 sc, ch 3, skip 3 sc, tr in next 2 sc, ch 3, skip 2 sc, 2 dtr in next sc, ch 2, skip next sc, trtr in next sc. Pass ball of China Blue through loop on hook to make stitch secure. Drop China Blue, pick up Chartreuse. Turn.
15 sc over bar of trtr, 4 sc in ch-2 sp, (sc in next 2 sts, 4 sc in next sp) 3 times; sc in next 5 sc. Ch 1, turn.
Working in back loop only, sc in next 26 sc, insert hook in next sc, draw loop through, drop Chartreuse, pick up China Blue, draw a loop through. Ch 9, turn.
Skip first sc, 2 dtr in next sc, ch 4, skip 2 sc, dtr in next 2 sc, ch 4, skip 4 sc, tr in next 2 sc, ch 4, skip 4 sc, dc in next 2 sc, ch 4, skip 4 sc, sc in next 5 sc. Pass ball of China Blue through loop on hook to make stitch secure. Drop China Blue, pick up Chartreuse.
20 sc in ch-9 loop, (sc in next 2 sts, 5 sc in next sp) 4 times; sc in next 5 sc. Ch 1, turn.
Working in back loop only, sc in next 38 sc, drop Chartreuse as before.
Pick up China Blue, draw a loop through first sc, sc in same place, sc in next 4 sc, ch 5, skip 5 sc, dc in next 2 sc, ch 5, skip 5 sc, tr in next 2 sc, (ch 5, skip 5 sc, dtr in next 2 sc) twice; ch 5, skip 2 sc, 2 dtr in next sc, ch 10, skip next sc, sl st in next sc. Break off. Turn.
Pick up Chartreuse, make 21 sc in ch-10 loop, (sc in next 2 sts, 7 sc in next sp) 5 times; sc in next 5 sc. Break off.
Left Wing
Work as for Right Wing until 2nd row is completed, ending with sc in next 5 ch. Sl st across short end to first sc of 2nd row.
Repeat 3rd row of Right Wing, sl st in next sc. Break off Chartreuse.
Repeat 4th row of Right Wing.
Attach Chartreuse to first sc of previous row, sc in same place, sc in next 4 sc, (4 sc in next sp, sc in next 2 sts) 3 times; 4 sc in ch-2 sp, 15 sc over bar of trtr, sl st in last sc of 3rd row. Break off.
Attach Chartreuse to first sc of previous row, sc in same place, then, working in back loop only, make sc in next 25 sc, sl st in next sc. Break off. Pick up China Blue, ch 9, turn. Complete other half of Wing to correspond with Right Wing.
Body
With China Blue, ch 14. Sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next ch, half dc in next 2 ch, dc in next 4 ch, half dc in next 2 ch, sc in next 2 ch, sl st in last ch. Break off.
Head
With Chartreuse, ch 8. Join with sl st to form ring. 20 sc in ring, sl st on side of first sc of Body, sc in each st around Body, making 3 sc at curved end. Sl st in first sc of Head. Break off.
Antennae
With China Blue, ch 25. Break off. Attach Chartreuse to first ch, ch 3, dc in same ch, ch 3, sl st in same ch, sl st in each st across center, sl st in center of Head, finish other half to correspond. Break off.
Assembly
Sew Wings to Body. Sew tips of Wings of 10 Butterflies together, having Heads toward center of circle. Place Butterflies over linen and sew in place. Cut away excess linen and hem raw edges. Make 3 more Place Mats like this.
Cut a piece of linen, 15 x 28 inches. Curve lower edges. Join 11 Butterflies as before to make a semi-circle. Place Butterflies around 1 long and 2 short sides. Sew in place and finish as before. Gather top edge in to measure 14 inches. With remaining material make waistband and ties and sew in place.
