Pattern instructions

Large Wing

Note

BUTTERFLY (Make 24)-Large Wing (Make 2) ... Starting at lower edge with China Blue, ch 25.

1st Row

Tr in 7th ch from hook, (ch 1, skip 1 ch, tr in next ch) twice; (ch 1, skip 1 ch, dc in next ch) 3 times; (ch 1, skip 1 ch, half dc in next ch) twice; ch 1, skip 1 ch, sc in next 3 ch. Draw ball through loop to fasten. Turn.

2nd Row

Attach Green to first sc, sc in same place, sc in next 2 sc, sc in next sp, sc in next half dc, dc in each sp and in each dc across, ending with 3 dc in last sp, draw ball of Green through loop to fasten.

3rd Row

Pick up Blue from opposite end of row, sc in first 5 sc, ch 1, skip 1 st, half dc in next dc, ch 1, skip 1 dc, dc in next dc, (ch 1, skip 1 dc, tr in next dc) 5 times; ch 1, skip 1 dc, in next dc make tr, ch 1 and tr; ch 1, dtr in next dc. Draw ball of Blue through loop to fasten. Turn.

4th Row

Pick up Green, make 10 sc over last d tr made, dc in next tr, 2 dc in next sp, (dc in next tr, dc in next sp) 7 times; half dc in next dc, half dc in next sp, sc in next 5 sc, draw ball of Green through loop to fasten.

5th Row

Attach Yellow to first sc on opposite side of starting chain, sc in first 3 ch, 2 sc in each sp across, 10 sc in end sp, 2 sc in side of next dc, sc in each remaining st across, draw ball of Yellow through loop to fasten.

6th Row

Draw up a Blue loop in 24th sc from end of row, ch 7, skip 1 sc, in next sc make tr, ch 1 and tr; (ch 1, skip 1 sc, tr in next sc) 4 times; (ch 1, skip 1 sc, dc in next sc) twice; ch 1, skip 1 sc, half dc in next sc, ch 1, skip 1 sc, sc in next 6 sc, fasten Blue as before.

7th Row

Pick up Green, sc in first 6 sc, half dc in next sp, dc in each st and in each sp across, ending with dc in last tr, drop Green, fasten as before.

8th Row

Pick up Yellow, sc in each st across, 10 sc in starting chain on 6th row, sl st in same sc on 5th row as starting chain was drawn through. Turn, sc in next 10 sc, drop Yellow, fasten as before.

9th Row

Pick up Blue, sc in first 4 sc, half dc in next sc, ch 1, dc in next sc, (ch 1, tr in next sc) 17 times; ch 1, dtr in next sc. Break off Blue. Turn.

10th Row

Draw Green through base of last d tr, 10 sc over dtr, 2 dc in each of next 15 sps, 2 half dc in next sp, half dc in next sp, sc in next sp and each remaining sc. Break off.

11th Row

Pick up Yellow and sc in each st across, sc closely along narrow edge of wing, drawing it in slightly. Join to first Yellow sc. Break off.

Small Wing

Note

SMALL WING (Make 2)... Starting at inner edge with Blue, ch 4.

1st Row

4 dc in 4th ch from hook. Ch 4, turn.

2nd Row

Skip first dc, (dc in next dc, ch 1) 3 times; dc in top of starting chain. Ch 3, turn.

3rd Row

Dc in first dc, (ch 1, 2 dc in next dc) 3 times; ch 1, skip 1 ch, 2 dc in next ch. Ch 4, turn.

4th Row

Dc in first dc, dc in next dc, * ch 1, 2 dc in next dc, dc in next dc. Repeat from * across, ending with dc in top of turning chain. Ch 3, turn.

5th Row

Skip first dc, * 2 dc in next dc, dc in next dc, ch 1, dc in next dc. Repeat from * across, ending with dc in top of turning chain. Ch 3, turn.

6th Row

Dc in first dc, * dc in each dc across group, ch 1, 2 dc in next dc. Repeat from * across, ending with dc in top of turning chain. Ch 1, turn.

7th Row

Sc in first dc, sc in next 4 dc, ch 2, sc in next 5 dc, ch 2, dc in next 5 dc, (ch 3, tr in next 5 dc) twice; ending with tr in top of turning chain. Break off. Turn.

8th Row

Attach Nile Green to first tr, ch 4, holding back on hook the last loop of each tr, make tr in next 4 tr, thread over and draw through all loops on hook (cluster made), ch 7, cluster over next 5 tr, ch 7, cluster over next 5 dc, ch 7, skip 1 sc, cluster over next 3 sc, ch 7, skip 2 sc, make a dc cluster over next 3 sc. Break off.

9th Row

Attach Yellow to tip of first tr cluster, 10 sc in each loop across. Break off.

Wing Marking

Note

WING MARKING (Make 2)... Starting at center with China Blue, ch 20.

1st Rnd

Tr in 7th ch from hook, (ch 1, skip 1 ch, tr in next ch) twice; (ch 1, skip 1 ch, dc in next ch) twice; ch 1, skip 1 ch, half dc in next ch, ch 1, skip next ch, 3 sc in next ch, now, working along opposite side of starting chain, skip 1 ch, half dc in next ch, (ch 1, dc at base of next dc) twice; (ch 1, tr at base of next tr) 3 times; ch 5, skip next ch, sl st in next ch. Break off.

2nd Rnd

Attach Green to back loop of first tr, sc in same place, * ch 3, sc in back loop of next st. Repeat from * around. Join and break off.

3rd Rnd

Attach Yellow to front loop of first tr, sl st in front loop of each st and each ch around. Join and break off.

Body

1st Row

Starting at center with Yellow, ch 22, sc in 2nd ch from hook, half dc in next 2 ch, dc in next 15 ch, half dc in next 2 ch, sc in next ch. Break off.

Next Rnd

Attach Blue to first sc, 2 sc in same place and in each st across, 3 sc in last sc; working along opposite side of starting chain, make sc in each ch across, sc in same place as first 2 sc. Join and break off.

Following Rnd

Attach Yellow to same place as sl st, sc in each sc around. Join and break off.

Head

1st Rnd

Starting at center with Blue, ch 5. Join with sl st to form ring. Ch 2, 12 half dc in ring. Join to first half dc. Break off.

2nd Rnd

Attach Yellow to same place as sl st, sc in same place, sc in next 5 half dc, sl st in end of Body, sc in each remaining half dc around. Join and break off.

Antennae

Antennae

With Blue make a chain 22 inches long, sl st in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across to center, sl st in center of head, sl st in each remaining chain across. Break off.

Assembly

Assembly

Sew Large and Small Wings and Wing Markings together. Sew Body in place over wings. Sew 16 Butterflies in place around edge of cloth and arrange remaining 8 Butterflies in circle at center of cloth. Sew in place.
