Pattern instructions

Square

Square

With White, ch 5, join with slip st to form a ring.

1st round

1st round: Pull loop on hook up to same height as a DC, yarn over hook, draw up a loose loop in ring, repeat from * twice (7 loops on hook), yarn over and draw through 6 loops, yarn over and draw through 2 remaining loops, ch 1 (bean stitch), ch 2, repeat from * 7 more times, join with slip st in tip of first bean st.

2nd round

2nd round: With White, work a bean stitch in tip of first bean stitch on round below, pick up Pink, draw through loop on hook and work 3 DC in space between first and second bean stitches, on the 3rd DC pick up White and work a bean stitch in tip of next bean st, pick up Pink, draw through ch of bean stitch and work 3 DC in next space, continue around row, always working a bean stitch with White in tip of bean stitch of round below and working 3 DC with Pink between bean stitches, in last space work 3 DC and join with slip st in tip of first bean stitch.

3rd round

3rd round: Pick up White and work a bean stitch in tip of bean stitch below, pick up Pink, 1 DC between bean stitch and first DC, 1 DC in each of next 3 DC, continue around row, working a bean stitch with White in tip of each bean stitch and 4 DC between bean stitches with Pink, join 4th DC of last group with slip st in first bean stitch.

4th round

4th round: Continue as before, working bean stitches with White but working 6 DC with Pink, increasing as follows: 1 DC between first bean stitch and first DC, 1 DC in each of next 3 DC, 2 DC in 4th DC, 2 DC in space after next bean stitch, 1 DC in each of 4 DC, continue around, working 2 DC in space before and after the 4th, 6th and 8th bean stitches, join in first bean stitch.

5th round

5th round: Work same as 4th round, increasing before and after the 2nd, 4th, 6th and 8th bean stitches (8 DC between bean stitches), join round, break off White.

6th round

6th round: With Pink, ch 3, 1 DC in each of 8 DC between bean stitches, 2 DC before and after the 2nd, 4th, 6th and 8th bean stitches and 1 DC in the 1st, 3rd, 5th and 7th bean stitches, join in 3rd st of ch 3.

7th round

7th round: Ch 3, skip 1st, 1 SC in next st, repeat from * to first corner, ch 5 for corner loop, continue around, working a ch 5 loop over each corner and 10 ch 3 loops between corners, join with slip st in first loop and fasten off.

Make and Join

Make 20 squares in all. Join on last round, having 4 squares in width and 5 squares in length of carriage robe.

Joining

Joining

Joining: To join squares, ch 1, insert hook in center st of corresponding ch 3 loop on adjacent square, draw yarn through both loops, ch 1, skip 1 DC, 1 SC in next st; join each ch 3 loop to corresponding loop on next square and join 3rd st of each corner ch 5 loop to 3rd st of corner loops. When all squares are joined, work edging.

Edging

1st row

Edging: 1st row: With Pink, work 3 SC in each ch-3 loop and 5 SC in each corner loop, join in 1st SC and break off.

2nd row

2nd row: With White, 1 SC in center st of 3 SC on edge, 7 DC in center st of next group of 3 SC, repeat from * around, spacing shells on corner loops so that robe will lie flat, join in first SC and break off.

3rd row

3rd row: With Pink, 1 SC in center DC of first shell, 7 Tr in SC between shells, repeat from * around, join in first SC and break off.

4th row

4th row: With White, slip st in SC between shells, ch 3, skip 1st, slip st in next st, repeat from * around entire afghan, join and fasten off.
