Ch 7, join with sl st to form ring.

Ch 3 (to count as dc), 4 dc in ring, ch 2; (5 dc in ring, ch 2) 3 times; join to top of ch-3.

Sc in same place as sl st, * ch 5, sc in 3rd dc of 5-dc group; ch 5, sc in last dc of group, ch 9, sc in last dc of next 5-dc group. Repeat from * around, ending with ch 5, tr in last sc.

Ch 3, 2 dc in loop; * ch 3, sc in next loop, ch 5, sc in next loop, ch 3; in ch-9 loop make 3 dc, ch 3 (for corner) and 3 dc. Repeat from * around, ending with ch 3; join. Fasten off.

Attach thread to a ch-5 loop, ch 5 (to count as d tr), in same loop make d tr, ch 5 and 2 d tr; * ch 7, sc in ch-3 at corner, ch 7, in next ch-5 loop make 2 d tr, ch 5 and 2 d tr. Repeat from * around, joining last ch-7 to top of 1st ch-5.

Ch 3, dc in back loop of next d tr, * dc in next 2 ch; in next ch make dc, ch 3 and dc; dc in next 2 ch, dc in back loop of next 2 d tr; ch 7, sc in ch-7 sp, sc in sc, sc in next ch-7 sp, ch 7, dc in back loop of next 2 d tr. Repeat from * around, joining last ch-7 to top of 1st ch-3.

Hereafter, when working d c's over d c's, pick up back loop of st only.

Ch 3, dc in next 4 dc, * dc in next ch; in next ch (corner) make dc, ch 3 and dc; dc in next ch, dc in next 5 dc, ch 6, sc in ch-7, sc in next 3 sc, sc in next ch-7, ch 6, dc in next 5 dc. Repeat from * around, joining last ch-6 to top of 1st ch-3.

Ch 3, dc in next 6 dc, * ch 2, dc in ch-3 sp, ch 2, dc in next 7 dc, ch 6, sc in next 5 sc, ch 6, dc in next 7 dc. Repeat from * around, joining as before.

Ch 3, dc in next 6 dc, * ch 3, dc in next sp, ch 3, dc in next sp, ch 3, dc in next 7 dc, ch 6, sc in next 5 sc, ch 6, dc in next 7 dc. Repeat from * around, joining as before.

Ch 3, dc in next 6 dc, * ch 2, dc in next sp, ch 3; in corner sp make tr, ch 3 and tr; ch 3, dc in next sp, ch 2, dc in next 7 dc, ch 6, sc in next 5 sc, ch 6, dc in next 7 dc. Repeat from * around, joining as before. Fasten off. This completes one motif.

For a single size spread, make 13 x 20 motifs. For a double size spread, make 17 x 20 motifs. Make necessary number of motifs, and sew together dc-groups and 5 sps at each corner, with neat over-and-over stitches on wrong side. Block to measurements given.
