Duck Potholder Pattern #S-354

MATERIALS: J. & P. COATS "KNIT-CRO-SHEEN," Art. A.64: 1 ball each of No. 1 White and No. 43 Dk. Yellow... Scraps of No. 12 Black... Milwards Steel Crochet Hook No. 4... A bone ring. Use thread double throughout.

BODY —Front... Starting at bottom with White, ch 4. 1st row: 2 sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next ch, 2 sc in last ch. Ch 1, turn. 2nd row: 2 sc in first sc (1 sc increased), sc in each sc across, 2 sc in last sc. Ch 1, turn. Repeat 2nd row until there are 21 sc on row. Inc 1 sc at beginning of every row until there are 29 sc on row. Now work without increasing until piece measures 4 inches in all. Dec 1 sc —to dec 1 sc, work off 2 sc as 1 sc— at beginning of every row until 21 sc remain. Dec 1 sc at both ends of every row until 7 sc remain. Work without decreasing for 7 more rows. Break off.

HEAD... Starting at center with White, ch 2. 1st rnd: 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook. 2nd rnd: 2 sc in each sc around. 3rd rnd: Sc in each sc, increasing 6 sc evenly around. Repeat 3rd rnd until there are 36 sc on last rnd. Break off.

BEAK... Attach Dk. Yellow to any sc on last rnd. 1st row: Sc in same place, sc in next 3 sc. Ch 1, turn. 2nd row: Sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn. 3rd row: Dec 1 sc, sc in next 2 sc. Ch 3, turn. 4th row: Holding back on hook the last loop of each dc, skip first sc, make dc in next 2 sc, thread over and draw through all loops on hook. Break off.

EYE... Starting at center with Black, ch 2. 1st rnd: 7 sc in 2nd ch from hook. Join and break off. Sew in place on Head. Sew Head in place on Body.

WING (Make 2)... Starting at top with Dk. Yellow, ch 2. 1st row: 2 sc in 2nd ch from hook. Ch 1, turn. 2nd row: 2 sc in first sc, sc in next sc. Ch 1, turn. 3rd row: Sc in each sc across, 2 sc in last sc. Ch 1, turn. 4th row: 2 sc in first sc, sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn. Repeat 3rd and 4th rows alternately until there are 15 sc on row, ending at straight edge. Ch 1, turn. Next row: Sc in each sc to within last 6 sc, 2 sc in next sc. Ch 1, turn. Following row: Sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn. Repeat last 2 rows once more. Ch 3, turn. Next row: Dc in next 2 sc, half dc in next 2 sc, sl st in next sc. Break off. Sew Wings in place.

FOOT (Make 2)... With Dk. Yellow, ch 2. 1st row: 2 sc in 2nd ch from hook. Ch 1, turn. Inc 1 sc at beginning of every row until there are 6 sc on row. Ch 3, turn. Next row: * Sl st in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next ch, skip 1 sc, sl st in next sc, ch 3. Repeat from * across. Break off. Sew Feet in place.

BACK... Work exactly as for Front.

For Padding, see patternbook page. Sew Front and Back pieces together. With White sc closely around bone ring. Sew in place.
