Sombrero Potholder Pattern
Sombrero-shaped potholder with red brim and crown, yellow trim, green French knots, blue outline embroidery, and bone ring. Directions given for Star Cotton Yarn and Star Rug Yarn with Aunt Lydia Heavy Rug Yarn in parenthesis. Originally published in American Thread #69, Pocket Potholders.

Brim
BRIM: With Red ch 37 (27) 1 sc in 2nd st from hook, 1 sc in each of the next 2 (1) sts of ch, 3 (2) sc in next st of ch, 1 sc in each of the next 28 (20) sts of ch, 3 (2) sc in next st of ch, 1 sc in each of the next 3 (2) sts of ch, ch 1 to turn all rows.
2nd Row. 1 sc in each of the 1st 4 (3) sc, 3 (2) sc in next sc, 1 sc in each of the next 30 (20) sc, 3 (2) sc in next sc, 1 sc in each remaining sc.
3rd Row. 1 sc in each of the 1st 5 (3) sc, 3 (2) sc in next sc, 1 sc in each of the next 32 (22) sc, 3 (2) sc in next sc, 1 sc in each remaining sc.
4th Row. 1 sc in each of the 1st 5 (3) sc, 3 (2) sc in next sc, 1 sc in each of the next 36 (24) sc, 3 (2) sc in next sc, 1 sc in each remaining sc (break yarn for "AUNT LYDIA" Rug Yarn).
5th Row. 2 sc in 1st sc, 1 sc in each of the next 4 sc, 3 sc in next sc, 1 sc in each of the next 40 sc, 3 sc in next sc, 1 sc in each of the next 4 sc, 2 sc in next sc.
6th Row. 1 sc in each of the 1st 6 sc, 3 sc in next sc, 1 sc in each of the next 44 sc, 3 sc in next sc, 1 sc in each remaining sc.

Brim Trim
Trim. With Yellow work 1 sc in each sc, break yarn.
With Green, embroider French Knots at even intervals.
With Yellow * ch 6 (4), turn, sc in 2nd st from hook, repeat from * for desired length.
Applique to brim as illustrated.
With Blue "STAR" Six Strand Embroidery Cotton embroider a line above and below Yellow trim in outline st.
Crown
CROWN: With Red ch 50 (38) join to form a ring and work 1 sc in each st of ch, join, ch 1 to turn all rows.
2nd Row. 1 sc in each sc.
Repeat the last row 10 (3) times, ch 9 (5) at end of last row.
13th (6th) Row. Skip 9 (5) sc, (thumb opening) 1 sc in each remaining sc.
14th (7th) Row. 1 sc in each sc and 1 sc in each st of ch.
Work 1 row even.
16th (9th) Row. Decrease 5 (5) sts evenly spaced (to decrease: insert hook in st, pull loop through, insert hook in next st, pull loop through, yarn over and work off all loops at one time).
Work 1 row even.
18th (11th) Row. Work same as 16th (9th) row but decrease 4 sts.
Work 1 row even.
Repeat the last 2 rows 3 (1) times.
Next 2 Rows. Same as 18th (11th) row.
Work 2 (1) rows even.
Next 5 (2) Rows. Same as 18th (11th) row, break yarn.
Thumb And Assembly
THUMB: With Red follow the directions given for thumb on pattern page.
Sew Crown to brim as illustrated.
With Blue cover a bone ring with sc and sew to back of hat about 1 inch from top.
