Strawberry Potholder Pattern
Strawberry-shaped potholder with red front and back sections, green hull, white seed embroidery, thumb opening, and green-covered bone ring. Directions given for Star Cotton Yarn and Star Rug Yarn with Aunt Lydia Heavy Rug Yarn in parenthesis. Originally published in American Thread #69, Pocket Potholders.

Front Section
FRONT SECTION: With Red ch 7 (5), 2 sc in 2nd st from hook, 1 sc in each of the next 3 (1) sts of ch, 2 sc in each of the next 2 sts of ch, ch 1 to turn all rows.
2nd Row. 2 sc in 1st sc, 1 sc in each remaining sc.
Work 1 (1) row even.
4th Row. Working in sc work 3 sc in 1st sc and 2 sc in last sc.
5th Row. 2 sc in 1st sc, 1 sc in each remaining sc.
6th Row. Increase 1 sc at the beginning and end of row.
Next 2 Rows. Same as 5th row.
Next Row. Same as 4th row.
Work 3 (1) rows even.
Next Row. Same as 5th row.
Next Row. Same as 4th row.
Next Row. Same as 5th row.
Work 3 (3) rows even.
Next Row. Decrease 1 sc at the beginning and end of row (to decrease: insert hook in st, pull loop through, insert hook in next st, pull loop through, yarn over and work off all loops at one time).
Work 1 row even.
Repeat the last 2 rows twice (once).
Next Row. Decrease in 1st 2 sts, 1 sc in each of the next 7 (9) sc, sl st in next sc, ch 1, turn.
Next Row. Skip the sl st, decrease in next 2 sts, 1 sc in each of the next 4 (6) sc, decrease in next 2 sts.
Next Row. Decrease in 1st 2 sts, 1 sc in each of the next 3 (5) sts, break yarn.
Next Row. Skip 1 sc from sl st of 24th (20th) row, 1 sc in each of the next 6 (5) sc, decrease in next 2 sts.
Next Row. Decrease in 1st 2 sts, 1 sc in each of the next 3 (2) sc, decrease in next 2 sts.
Next Row. Decrease in 1st 2 sts, 1 sc in next 2 sts, break yarn.
Back Section
BACK SECTION: Work 1st 21 (15) rows same as front section.
Next Row. 1 sc in each of the 1st 6 (5) sc, ch 8 (6), skip 8 (6) sc for thumb opening, 1 sc in each remaining sc.
Next Row. Decrease in 1st 2 sts, 1 sc in each of the next 10 (12) sc, 1 sc in each st of ch, 1 sc in each of the next 4 (3) sc, decrease in next 2 sts, then continue back section same as front section.
Thumb
THUMB: With Red follow directions on pattern page.
Hull
HULL: With Green ch 26, sc in 2nd st from hook, sc in next st of ch, 1 dc in each of the next 4 sts, 1 trc in each of the next 12 sts, 1 dc in each of the next 4 sts, 1 sc in each of the next 3 sts, ch 1, turn.
2nd Row. 1 sc in each of the next 4 sts, 1 dc in each of the next 10 sts, 1 sc in each remaining st, break thread.
Work 2 more hull sections in same manner and sew to top of front section as illustrated.
Assembly
With White embroider seeds on front section using a running st.
With Red crochet the 2 sections together with a row of sc leaving last 2 rows free for opening. Without breaking yarn work a row of sc around opening of back and front sections.
With Green cover a bone ring with sc and attach to holder as illustrated.
