MATERIALS: J. & P. COATS OR CLARK'S O.N.T. PEARL COTTON, Size 5, 14 balls of Black... Steel Crochet Hook No. 5... ½ yard each of lining and buckram. Use thread double throughout. GAUGE: 2 patterns make 2½ inches.

Starting at top, make a chain about 10 inches long (5 ch sts to 1 inch).

In 5th ch from hook make 4 tr, ch 1 and 4 tr (a shell); * skip 3 ch, dc in next ch, skip 3 ch, in next ch make 4 tr, ch 1 and 4 tr. Repeat from * across until row measures 9 inches, ending with 4 tr (half shell). Cut off remaining chain. Turn.

* Skip the half shell, in sp between 2nd and 3rd tr's of next shell make 4 tr. Now ch 1 and, working over 4 tr just completed, make 4 tr between 2nd and 3rd tr's of half shell just skipped, sc in next ch-1 sp. Repeat from * across, ending with half shell in last half of last shell. Turn.

Repeat the 2nd row until piece measures 16 inches in all. Break off.

GUSSET (Make 2) ... Starting at bottom, ch 6.

Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch. Ch 1, turn.

2 sc in 1st sc (an inc), sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn.

Repeat the 2nd row until there are 17 sc in row.

Work 5 rows straight.

Dec 1 sc—to dec 1 sc, work off 2 sc as 1 sc—sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn.

Repeat the last row until 5 sts remain. Break off.

Sew gussets in place, leaving a 3½ inch flap. With 4 strands make a 2 inch chain loop and sew to center of flap. Fasten with a rhinestone button.

HANDLE ... Ch 6.

Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Ch 1, turn.

Sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn.

Repeat the 2nd row until piece measures 9 inches. Join Handle piece to form ring.

Line bag and Handle with buckram and lining material and sew 4 inches of Handle to center back of bag.
