Materials

MATERIALS: J. & P. Coats Knit-Cro-Sheen, 8 balls of Black. Steel Crochet Hook No. 1. ½ Yard of each of red, purple and green velvet ribbon, 1½ inches wide. 15 velvet buttons to match ribbon (5 of each color). ½ yard buckram and 2 yard lining for Bag. Use a triple thread throughout entire set.

Hat

Setup

HAT Starting at center of Crown, ch 4. Join.

1st rnd

8 sc in ring.

2nd rnd

2 sc in each sc around.

3rd rnd

(Ch 4, sc in next 5 sc) twice; ch 4, sc in each sc around.

4th rnd

Sc in each sc around, increasing wherever necessary to keep work flat.

5th rnd

* Ch 4, sc in next 5 sc. Repeat from * around.

Pattern repeat

Repeat the last 2 rnds alternately until piece measures 8½ inches in diameter. Work without increasing for another 2 inch.

Decrease section

On next sc rnd, dec 10 sts at equal distances around. Work 1 rnd in pattern. Repeat the last 2 rnds alternately until underside measures 1¾ inches, ending with a pattern rnd.

1st row

Work is now done in rows instead of rnds. Ch 1, turn. 1st row: Sc in sc across. Ch 1, turn.

2nd row

Work in pattern across. Ch 1, turn.

Row repeat

Repeat the last 2 rows alternately for 2 more inches, ending with a pattern row. Do not turn but ch 10 and work in rnds again (try hat on—if a larger headsize is desired, add a few more chains to the ch-10; if a smaller headsize is desired make fewer chains).

Brim rnds

Work 3 rnds in pattern and break off. Make 3 velvet bows, one of each color, and sew to front of Hat. Sew a button to center of each bow.

Bag Side

Setup

BAG SIDE (Make 2) ... Starting at bottom, ch 88 to measure 15½ inches.

1st row

Sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each ch across. Ch 1, turn.

2nd row

(Right side of work) * Sc in each of next 3 sc, ch 4. Repeat from * across, ending with sc in each of last 3 sc. Ch 1, turn.

3rd row

Sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn.

4th row

Sc in 1st sc, * ch 4, sc in each of next 3 sc. Repeat from * across, ending with sc in last sc. Ch 1, turn.

5th row

Sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn.

Pattern note

The last 4 rows constitute pattern. Work in pattern, decreasing 1 sc at both sides of next row—to dec 1 sc, work off 2 sc as 1 sc—and every other row thereafter 8 times in all.

Further decreases

Now dec 1 sc at both ends of every row 16 times in all. Piece should measure 7½ inches deep.

Flap

Do not break off but work Flap as follows: On next row work across the first 19 sts in pattern. Ch 1, turn. Work straight in pattern over these 19 sts only for 3 inches. Then dec 1 sc at both sides of every other row 7 times in all. Break off.

Bag Gussets

Bottom Gusset

BOTTOM GUSSET ... Ch 13. Work in pattern as for Bag for 15 inches. Break off.

Side Gusset (Make 2)

SIDE GUSSET (Make 2) ... Ch 13. Work in pattern, decreasing 1 sc at beginning of each row until all sts are worked off. Break off.

Finishing

Assembly

Line each piece with buckram and then with lining material. Sew Bottom Gusset between the 2 long sides of Bag. Sew a Side Gusset into each side of Bag at bottom and sew up side seams to Flap.

Fasteners

Fasten Bag with snap fasteners. Sew buttons on as desired.
