Advanced Hook No. 10 Doily

A luncheon set with crocheted doilies decorated with butterfly motifs featuring cluster stitches, in three sizes.

Size
Place Doily 15 inches in diameter; Bread and Butter Plate Doily 10½ inches in diameter; Glass Doily 7 inches in diameter

Pattern instructions

Place Doily

Setup

PLACE DOILY ... Starting at center with Hunter's Green, ch 10. Join with sl st to form ring.

Rnd 1

Ch 4, 19 tr in ring. Join with sl st to top of ch-4.

Rnd 2

Ch 6, * tr in next tr, ch 2. Repeat from * around. Join with sl st to 4th ch of ch-6.

Rnd 3

Ch 7, * tr in next tr, ch 3. Repeat from * around. Join.

Rnds 4–5

Work as for last rnd, starting 4th rnd with ch 9 and having ch-5 between tr's, and starting 5th rnd with ch 10 and having ch 6 between tr's. Join.

Rnd 6

Ch 8, tr in same place as sl st, * ch 4, in next tr make tr, ch 4 and tr. Repeat from * around, ending with ch 4. Join.

Rnd 7

Ch 9, * tr in next tr, ch 5. Repeat from * around. Join.

Rnds 8–9

Ch 10, * tr in next tr, ch 6. Repeat from * around. Join.

Rnds 10–11

Work as for last rnd, having 1 ch more on starting chain and between tr's on each rnd.

Rnd 12

Repeat 6th rnd.

Rnd 13

Ch 8, * tr in next tr, ch 4. Repeat from * around. Join.

Rnds 14–15

Repeat 7th rnd.

Rnd 16

Repeat 8th rnd.

Rnds 17–18

Repeat 10th and 11th rnds. Join and break off at end of 18th rnd.

Butterfly Large Wing

Note

BUTTERFLY (Make 13)-Large Wing ... Starting at center with Mid Rose, ch 6. Join with sl st to form ring.

Row 1

Ch 4, 6 tr in ring. Ch 4, turn.

Row 2

Tr in first tr, 2 tr in each tr across, 2 tr in top of turning chain. Ch 4, turn.

Row 3

Skip first tr, 2 tr in each tr across, tr in top of turning chain. Ch 5, turn.

Row 4

Holding back on hook the last loop of each dtr, skip first tr, d tr in next 3 tr, thread over and draw through all loops on hook (cluster made), dtr in next 3 tr, cluster over next 3 tr, ch 5, sl st in next 2 tr, ch 4, tr in each tr across, tr in top of turning chain. Ch 5, turn.

Row 5

Skip first tr, make a d tr cluster over next 5 tr, d tr in next 3 tr, cluster over next 5 tr, d tr in top of turning chain. Break off. With wrong side of last row facing, attach thread to ring and make another wing the same way.

Butterfly Edging

Rnd 1

EDGING... Ist rnd: Attach Yellow to ring and sc closely around both wings. Join and break off.

Rnd 2

Attach Black Tatting-Crochet to first sc, sl st in back loop of each sc around. Join and break off.

Small Wing

Note

SMALL WING (Make 2)... Starting at center with Mid Rose, ch 14.

Row 1

Sc in 2nd ch from hook, half dc in next ch, dc in next ch, tr in next 7 ch, dc in next ch, half dc in next ch, sc in next ch.

Rnd 1

Now work around as follows: Ist rnd: Working across opposite side of starting chain, make sc in each ch across, sc in each st across. Join and break off.

Rnd 2

Attach Yellow to first sc, sc in back loop of each sc around. Join and break off.

Rnd 3

Attach Black to first sc, sl st in back loop of each sc around. Join and break off.

Body

Row 1

BODY ... Starting at Head with Black Tatting-Crochet, ch 10. Join with sl st to form ring, ch 21. Ist row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next 3 ch, half dc in next ch, dc in next 13 ch, half dc in next ch, sc in next ch, sc closely around ring. Join and break off.

Antennae

Row 1

ANTENNAE... With Yellow, make a chain 2 inches long. Ist row: Sl st in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Break off.

Row 2

Attach Black to first sl st, sl st in each st to center, sl st in center of Head, sl st in each remaining st on chain. Break off.

Assembly And Variations

Assembly

Sew Wings and Body together. Sew Butterflies around Doily.

Bread and Butter Plate Doily

BREAD AND BUTTER PLATE DOILY ... Work as for Place Doily until 12 rnds are completed. Join and break off. Make 8 Butterflies and sew in place around Doily.

Glass Doily

GLASS DOILY ... Work as for Place Doily until 6 rnds are completed. Join and break off. Make 5 Butterflies and sew in place around Doily. Starch lightly and press.
