Butterfly Potholder Pattern #9351
A butterfly-shaped potholder with upper and lower circular wings, a stuffed tube body, and a bone ring hanger.

Pattern instructions
Upper Wing
Make 2.
Starting at center, ch 3. In 2nd ch from hook, make sc, hdc, 16 dc (18 sts). Do not join rnds. Hereafter work only in the back loop of each st.
2 dc in each st around (36 dc).
* Dc in 2 dc, 2 dc in next dc (an inc). Repeat from * around (48 dc). Continue thus, making 12 increases on each rnd, being careful not to have increases fall directly over each other, until piece measures 4 1/2 inches in diameter; then make hdc in next st, sc in next st, sl st in next st. Fasten off.
Lower Wing
Make 2.
Work as for Upper Wing until piece measures 4 1/4 inches in diameter. Fasten off.
Body
Starting at one end, ch 16. Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Ch 1, turn. Hereafter work only in the back loop of each sc.
2 sc in 1st sc (an inc made), sc in each sc to last 2 sc, work off last sc as 1 (a dec made). Ch 1, turn.
Skip 1st sc, sc in each sc to last sc, 2 sc in last sc. Ch 1, turn. Repeat the 2nd and 3rd rows alternately until 20 ridges have been made (2 rows make 1 ridge). Fasten off.
Finishing
Double this piece lengthwise and sew long edges together, forming a tube. Stuff tube with cotton. Pull one end of tube through bone ring for 1/2 inch and sew securely. Line wings if desired and arrange upper and lower wings as in illustration and tack in place. Sew body piece across joining of wings.
