Large Wing

Note

1st row

Starting at inner edge with Yellow, ch 36. Half dc in 6th ch from hook, ch 2, skip 2 ch, dc in next ch, (ch 2, skip 2 ch, tr in next ch) 6 times; ch 2, skip 2 ch, dc in next ch, ch 2, skip 2 ch, half dc in next ch, ch 2, skip 2 ch, sl st in next ch. Now work around as follows: Working along opposite side of starting chain, make 5 sc in first sp, (sc in next ch, 2 sc in next sp) 9 times; sc in next ch, 9 sc in next sp, (sc in next st, 2 sc in next sp) 9 times; sc in next st, 4 sc in next sp. Join with sl st to first sc. Break off.

1st row (rows)

Now work in rows as follows: Attach Black to same place as sl st, sc in same place, sc in next 4 sc, sc at base of next sc-long sc made-(sc in next 2 sc, sc at base of next sc) 9 times; sc in next 5 sc. Break off.

2nd row

Skip first sc, attach Yellow to next sc, ch 3, dc in same place, (ch 2, skip 2 sc, 2 dc in next sc) 4 times; (ch 2, skip 2 sc, 2 tr in next sc) 4 times; (ch 2, skip 2 sc, 2 d tr in next sc) 4 times. Ch 5, turn.

3rd row

Skip first dtr, dtr in next dtr, (ch 3, d tr in next 2 dtr) 3 times; (ch 3, tr in next 2 tr) 4 times; (ch 3, dc in next 2 dc) 4 times; ch 3, skip next dc, sl st in top of starting chain. Turn.

4th row

Outline

Attach China Blue to first free sc on inner side of Wing and sc in each sc across, ch 5, skip next Black sc, sc in next free sc, (ch 5, skip next free Black sc, sc in next free sc) 12 times. Join and break off. Attach China Blue to first Yellow row and sc closely across side to joint d tr, sc in joint dtr, ch 5, sc in 5th ch from hook (picot made), sc in same place as last sc, sc closely across remaining side of Wing. Break off. When working Outline on 2nd Large Wing, start at opposite side so Wings will correspond.

Small Wing

Note

Make 2. Starting at inner edge with Yellow, ch 10. Join with sl st to form ring.

Ch 3, 8 dc in ring. Ch 3, turn.

2nd row

Dc in first dc, (ch 2, skip next dc, 2 dc in next dc) 3 times; ch 2, 2 dc in top of starting chain. Ch 3, turn.

3rd row

Skip first dc, dc in next dc, ch 3, tr in next 2 dc, ch 3, dtr in next 2 dc, ch 3, tr in next 2 dc, ch 3, dc in next dc, dc in top of turning chain. Ch 3, turn.

4th row

Skip first dc, dc in next dc, ch 4, tr in next 2 tr, (ch 4, 2 d tr in next dtr) twice; ch 4, tr in next 2 tr, ch 4, dc in next dc, dc in top of turning chain. Ch 3, turn.

5th row

Skip first dc, dc in next dc, ch 5, tr in next 2 tr, ch 5, dtr in next 2 dtr, ch 5, 2 dtr in next sp, ch 5, dtr in next 2 dtr, ch 5, tr in next 2 tr, ch 5, dc in next dc, dc in top of turning chain. Break off.

Edging

Attach China Blue to ring and sc closely around Wing. Join and break off.

Body

1st row

Starting at long side with Black, ch 24. Sc in 2nd ch from hook, half dc in next ch, dc in next ch, half dc in next ch, sc in next ch (Head), half dc in next ch, dc in next 3 ch, half dc in next ch, sc in next ch, half dc in next ch, dc in next ch, tr in next 7 ch, dc in next ch, half dc in next ch, sc in next ch. Break off.

1st rnd

Now work around as follows: Attach Yellow to first sc, sc in same sc, sc in next 3 sts, sl st at base of next sc (long st made), sc in next 5 sts, sl st at base of next sc, sc in each remaining st across; working along opposite side of starting chain make sc in each ch across, making long sts over sc's to correspond with opposite side. Join and break off.

2nd rnd

With Black make a chain 1 1/2 inches long (Antenna), sl st in first sc on Head, sc in each sc around Head and Body, making long sts over long sts as before. Join to first sc. Make another chain 1 1/2 inches long for other Antenna. Break off.

Finishing

Assembly

Sew Wings together. Sew Body in place. Pin 14 Butterflies in place around organdy as illustrated.

Backing

Cut out material in back of Butterflies, leaving 1/4 inch for hem. Sew hem and Butterflies in place, joining adjacent picots on Wings. Sew a Butterfly to each end of runner.

Finishing

Starch lightly and press.
