Motif
Starting at center, with Mexicana ch 3, join with sl st.
Ch 3 (to count as dc); in ring make 2 dc, ch 3; (3 dc, ch 3) 3 times; join to ch-3 first made.
Ch 3, * in next ch-3 sp (corner) make 3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc; repeat from * 2 more times. In next ch-3 make 3 dc, ch 3, 2 dc; join.
Ch 3, 2 more dc in sp between groups; * in next ch-3 (corner) make 3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc; 3 dc in next sp. Repeat from * to last corner; join.
Ch 3, 3 dc in next sp, * in corner sp make 3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc; 3 dc in next 2 sps. Repeat from * around, ending with 2 dc in sp preceding ch-3; join. Fasten off.
Attach Black at sp following joining, ch 3 to count as dc; work around, making 3 dc in each sp, and (3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc) in each corner; join. Fasten off.
Make 158 motifs. See chart. Crochet motifs together with sc's on wrong side, picking up a single loop at back of each motif for each sc, thus forming ridges on right side.
Edging
Attach Black at lowest corner of lowest motif at right. Keeping work flat, work sc to sp following next corner of same motif; ch 2, in next sp make 4 dc; ch 3, sl st in top of last dc made (p); 4 more dc in same sp (a shell), ch 2, sc in next sp, ch 2, 4 dc in next sp; 4 dc in 1st free sp on next motif, ch 2, sc in next sp, ch 2, shell in next sp, sc around to sp following corner of same motif. Continue thus around Afghan. Fasten off.
