Pattern instructions

Strip

Starting (Make 5)

Starting at narrow edge with Black, ch 58 to measure 12 inches.

1st row

Dc in 6th ch from hook, * ch 1, skip 1 ch, dc in next ch. Repeat from * across (27 sps). Ch 4, turn.

2nd row

Black section

Repeat 2nd row 6 more times, omitting turning chain on last row. Drop Black, attach White. Next row: Ch 4 and work in pattern across. Break off White. Following row: Pick up Black, ch 4 and work in pattern across. Ch 4, turn. Work in pattern with Black for 5 more rows, omitting turning chain on last row. Drop Black, attach White. Next row: Ch 4 and work in pattern across, break off White. Attach Black and work in pattern for 8 rows, omitting turning chain on last row. Break off Black. This completes one Black section.

Scarlet section

Attach Scarlet and work in pattern as for Black section, using Skipper Blue where White was used on the Black Section. Omit turning chain at end of last row. Break off Scarlet. This completes Scarlet section.

Continue

Attach Black and make another Black section with 2 White stripes as before. Continue in this manner making Black and Scarlet sections alternately (having White stripes on the Black sections and Skipper Blue stripes on the Scarlet sections) until 7 sections in all are completed (4 Black and 3 Scarlet). Sew long sides of each Strip together.

Weaving

Setup

Place Afghan lengthwise on a curtain stretcher—it will be easier to handle this way. However, it may be done without the use of a curtain stretcher.

Weaving

Cut 2 strands of Black each 80 inches long, thread these strands into a bodkin and weave in and out through first row of sps, leaving enough free yarn at each end to make fringe. Cut 2 more strands of Black and weave through the same row of sps, going under rows that were passed over previously. Weave Black through next 8 rows the same way. Make 1 row of White, 7 Black, 1 White and 9 Black. This completes one Black section. Now make 9 rows of Scarlet, 1 Skipper Blue, 7 Scarlet, 1 Skipper Blue and 9 Scarlet. This completes a Scarlet section. Continue to work in pattern, alternating Scarlet and Black sections until all sps have been filled.

Fringe

Remove from curtain stretcher. Knot first 12 strands together to make a fringe. Make fringe, knotting every 12 strands across. Complete other end to correspond. Trim ends evenly.
