Pattern instructions

Afghan

1st Row

With brown A, ch 266 (a multiple of 6 plus 2), skip first st, 1 sc in each st to end of chain.

2nd Row

ch 1, turn, 1 sc in each st, taking up 2 threads of sts below.

3rd Row

ch 1, turn, 1 sc in first sc, 1 dc in first sc of 1st row, inserting hook under 2 vertical threads of this st, * skip 1 sc in 2nd row (right behind the dc), 1 sc in each of the next 5 sc in 2nd row, 1 dc in 6th sc from last dc in 1st row; repeat from * to end of row, fasten off.

4th Row

with brown B and working from wrong side of last row, make 1 sc in each st.

5th Row

ch 1, turn, 1 sc in each of the first 2 sts of 4th row, insert hook under the first dc in 3rd row and make a dc (a dc around the post), * skip 1 sc behind the dc just made, 1 sc in each of the next 5 sc, 1 dc around the post of next dc in 3rd row; repeat from * ending row with 1 sc less after the last dc than in 3rd row; fasten off.

6th Row

with brown C and working from wrong side of last row, work 1 sc in each st.

7th Row

ch 1, turn, 1 sc in each of the first 3 sc, * 1 dc around the post of next dc, skip the sc behind the dc just made, 1 sc in each of the next 5 sc; repeat from *, ending row with 1 sc less after the dc than in 5th row; fasten off.

8th Row

with brown D work as in 6th row.

9th Row

1 sc in each of the first 4 sts; continue in pattern as in 7th row; fasten off.

Continue

Continue in this way to work in pattern, 2 rows of each color, always changing color at beginning of the plain sc row. Use colors as follows: 2 rows each of tan E and F; the last row (13th) will begin and end with 6 sc.

14th Row

with yellow G, work 1 sc in each st.

15th Row

ch 1, turn, 1 sc in first sc, 1 dc around the first sc in 13th row, 1 sc in each of the next 5 sc (in 14th row), 1 dc around the post of next dc; continue in pattern to end of row.

Color Sequence

Continue in pattern, working 2 rows of each color, in order as follows: 2 rows white, 2 rows black, 2 rows white, 2 rows yellow G, 2 rows each of tan F and E, 2 rows each of brown D, C and B; 6 rows brown A, 2 rows each of brown B, C and D, tan E and F. The last tan row will be the 49th row from beginning of afghan.

Repeat

Repeat the last 36 rows from 14th to 49th row (inclusive), 4 times, then repeat from 14th to 35th row (inclusive) once more, ending with 2 rows in brown A. There will be 6 light stripes in afghan (see illustration).

Border

1st Round

With brown C and working from right side, * make 1 sc in each st along one side of afghan, 3 sc in corner st, 1 sc in each row on end of afghan, 3 sc in corner st; repeat from * on remaining 2 sides, join with a slip st in first sc.

2nd Round

do not turn, ch 1, 1 sc in next sc. * ch 1, yarn over hook, skip 1 st, draw up a loop in next st, yarn over, draw up another loop in same st as before, yarn over, draw up a 3rd loop in same st, yarn over and through all 7 loops on hook, ch 1 (a puff st), ch 1, skip 1 st, 1 sc in next st; repeat from * to next corner, spacing sts so that a puff st will come in the st just before the 3 corner sts; ch 1, 1 sc in the first of the 3 corner sts, ch 1, a puff st in next st (corner st), ch 1, 1 sc in next st, ch 1, a puff st in next st; * ch 1, skip 1 st, 1 sc in next st, ch 1, skip 1 st, a puff st in next st; repeat from last * to next corner, work 2nd corner same as first; continue in this way to end of round, join with a slip st in first sc and fasten off.

3rd Round

with brown A, work 1 sc in space before a puff st, * 3 sc in top of puff st, 1 sc in each of the next 2 spaces; repeat from * around the entire afghan, join and fasten off.
