COATS & CLARK'S O.N.T. "SPEED-CRO-SHEEN" MERCERIZED COTTON, Art. C.44: 4 balls of No. 12 Black; and J. & P. COATS "KNIT-CRO-SHEEN" METALLIC, Art. A.64: 3 balls of No. M.126 Spanish Red. Milwards Steel Crochet Hook No. 2/0 (double zero). A 10-inch Black Crown Zipper, Art. F.2. A piece of heavy cardboard... ¼ yard of taffeta ... ¼ yard whaleboning... ½ yard black grosgrain ribbon, 1½ inches wide. GAUGE: 11 sc make 2 inches; 6 rnds make 1 inch.

BASE ... Starting at center with Black, ch 37.

2 sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next ch and in each ch across, making 3 sc in last ch; now working along opposite side of starting chain, make sc in each ch across, sc in same ch where first 2 sc were made (74 sc).

2 sc in each of next 2 sc (2 sc increased), sc in each sc across to within next 3-sc group, (2 sc in next sc) 3 times; sc in each remaining sc, ending with 2 sc in last sc (80 sc).

Sc in each sc around.

Sc in each sc around, increasing 6 sc evenly spaced at both ends of Base.

Repeat last 2 rnds until there are 116 sc on rnd. Ch 1, turn.

Sc around the post of each sc around. Join with a sl st. Turn.

Sc in each sc around.

Repeat last rnd 7 more times. At end of last rnd ch 1, turn.

Next rnd: Insert hook in first sc, with middle finger of left hand, hold thread down against back of work to form a 1½-inch loop, thread over hook and draw loop through, thread over hook and draw through both loops on hook (loop st made), make a loop st in each sc around.

Following rnd: Loop st in each st around. Join with a sl st in first loop st. Turn.

Next rnd: Sc in each loop st around, decreasing 1 sc on rnd—to dec 1 sc, work off 2 sc as 1 sc.

Now work in pattern as follows: Note: When working pattern st, always keep the Black dropped loop and thread in front of work when working with Spanish Red.

1st rnd: Attach 2 strands of "Knit-Cro-Sheen" Metallic, drop loop from hook, with 2 strands of Spanish Red, ch 3, holding back on hook the last loop of each dc, make dc in each of next 3 sc, thread over and draw through all loops on hook (cluster made), * ch 5, skip next sc, make a cluster, having a dc in each of next 4 sc. Repeat from * around, ending with ch 5, sl st in tip of first cluster. Drop loop from hook.

2nd rnd: Pick up dropped Black loop, ch 3, 3 dc in same sc as ch-3 (shell), * sc in tip of next cluster, 4 dc in next free sc following same cluster (another shell). Repeat from * around, ending with sc in tip of last cluster. Drop Black loop from hook.

3rd rnd: Pick up dropped Spanish Red loop, sl st in first dc of next shell, ch 2, (holding back on hook the last loop of dc, make a dc by inserting hook in next dc of shell and under the ch-5 behind shell) 3 times; thread over hook and draw through all loops on hook (cluster), * ch 5, cluster working over the next ch-5 and into the 4 dc of next shell. Repeat from * around, ending with ch 5, sl st in tip of first cluster. Drop loop from hook.

Repeat 2nd and 3rd rnds alternately until 14 shell rnds have been completed. Break off Spanish Red.

Next rnd: With Black sc in each st around. Repeat last rnd 5 more times. At end of last rnd, ch 1, turn.

Work 2 loop st rnds same as before. Join at end of last rnd. Turn.

Next rnd: Sc in each st around. Join and turn. Following rnd: Sl st in each sc around. Join and break off.

HANDLE ... With Black, ch 83.

1st and 2nd rnds: Work as for Base.

Sc in each sc around, increasing 3 sc evenly spaced at both ends of Handle. Join and break off.

Cut a piece of cardboard same shape as bottom of Bag. Place cardboard in bottom of Bag. Line Bag. Sew in zipper. Cut ribbon same length as Handle and sew to wrong side of Handle. Sew ends of Handle to top of Bag as illustrated.
