Work body and head of Penguin real tight. Wings quite loose.

The Penguin will be equally attractive made in any of the following yarns: "Dawn" Knitting Worsted, "Dawn" or "Clover Leaf" Sheland Floss or Lustre Wool.

Tail

1st Row

TAIL. 1st Row. With Black, ch 4, 3 sc on chain.

2nd to 7th Rows

2nd to 7th Rows. 2 sc in first and last sc, 1 sc in each remaining sc and work 3 rows even.

11th to 19th Rows

11th to 19th Rows. Increase in first and last sc. (33 sc)

20, 21, 22, 23, 24 Rows

20, 21, 22, 23, 24 Rows. Start each row with ch 2 and end with a dc. Remaining sts work in sc. Work 2 rows even.

27 to 41 Rows

27 to 41 Rows. Increase 1 sc at beginning of each row. Work 20 rows even.

62nd Row

62nd Row. Sc in first 7 sc then decrease by crocheting 8 and 9 sc together, decrease at other side in 8th and 9th sc and work 1 row even.

Next 12 rows

Next 12 rows repeat 62nd and 63rd rows. Without breaking yarn BEGIN HEAD. Work back over 15 sc.

Head

2nd & 3rd Rows

2nd & 3rd Rows. Decrease 1 st at beginning of each row and work 2 rows even.

6th & 7th Rows

6th & 7th Rows. Increase 1 st at beginning of each row and work 1 row even.

9th Row

9th Row. Increase 1 st at beginning of row.

10th Row

10th Row. Sc in sc then chain 12 for bill.

11th Row

11th Row. 11 sc in chain and 11 sc in each sc.

12th Row

12th Row. Increase 1 sc at beginning of row and sc in each sc, omitting last 5 sc in bill.

13th Row

13th Row. Decrease 1 st at beginning of row and work 1 row even.

15th & 16th Rows

15th & 16th Rows. Decrease 1 st at beginning of row.

17th, 18th, 19th & 20th Rows

17th, 18th, 19th & 20th Rows. Decrease 1 st at beginning and end of each row. Break yarn. Join at other side and work other half of head to correspond.

Join and work neck

Join yarn between the two headpieces, work over free sc, there should be 4 sc, work 11 rows even.

12th Row

12th Row. Increase 1 st each side and work 10 rows even.

23rd Row

23rd Row. Increase 1 st each side and work 8 rows even. Then decrease 1 st at beginning of each row until 3 sts remain and work 12 more rows even. Break yarn.

FRONT SECTIONS. With White ch 6, 5 sc on ch and work 3 more rows of sc.

5th to 21st Rows

5th to 21st Rows. Increase 1 st at beginning of each row. (22 sc) and work 7 rows even.

Lower Section

Starting row

LOWER SECTION. Ch 2, 6 sc in first ch.

2nd, 3rd & 4th Rows

5th, 6th, 7th & 8th Rows. 2 sc in every 3rd sc and work 5 rows even.

Work over 21 sc

Work over 21 sc, turn work and work back over the 21 sc, turn and work 1 more row over the 21 sc.

Next 10 rows

Next 10 rows decrease 1 st at beginning and end of each row. Break yarn.

Assembly of sections

Sew black head pieces together, sew white and black sections together starting at lower edge of bill, seam 2 inch each side at feet, fit in round piece matching to black tail piece and sew, leaving enough open to fill. Attach white at bill and work 7 rows, join and break yarn. Fill and sew the remainder of lower section in place.

Feet

Starting row

FEET. Ch 6, 5 sc on chain and work 1 more row of sc.

3rd and 4th Rows

3rd and 4th Rows. Increase 1 st in first and last sc.

5th to 10th Rows

5th to 10th Rows. Increase in first sc.

11th, 12th, 13th & 14th Rows

11th, 12th, 13th & 14th Rows. Decrease 1 st at beginning of each row. Make 2 White and 2 Black sections. Crochet them together, fill slightly and sew in position.

Wings

Starting row

WINGS. With White ch 9, 8 sc on ch. Work even until wing measures about 6 inches.

Wing assembly

Make 2 white and 2 black sections, crochet them together with black. Work a second row of sc all around wing decreasing at lower edge to shape, across top of wing decrease until 3 sc remain. Sew in position.

Eyes

Make eyes in white by working 2 rows of outline stitch with a French Knot at top of eye.
