Starting at center of base, ch 3.

9 hdc in 3rd ch from hook. Sl st in top st of starting ch (10 sts, counting turning ch as 1 hdc). Hereafter work only in the back loop of each hdc.

Ch 2 (to count as hdc), hdc in same place as sl st, 2 hdc in each st around (20 sts). Join with sl st in top st of 1st ch-2.

Ch 2, hdc in each st around, increasing 10 hdc in each rnd—to inc a hdc, make 2 hdc in 1 st. Join. There should be 70 hdc in 7th rnd, and piece should now measure 2¾ inches in diameter. This completes base of glass jacket. Do not fasten off but work side as follows:

Ch 2, hdc in each st around. Join.

Ch 2, hdc in next 8 sts, * skip 2 sts, 6 tr in next st, skip 2 sts, hdc in next 9 sts. Repeat from * around. Join last tr in top st of 1st ch-2.

Sl st in next st, ch 2, hdc in next 6 sts, * ch 2, sc between 1st 2 tr, (ch 3, sc between next 2 tr) 4 times; ch 2, skip 1 hdc, hdc in next 7 sts. Repeat from * around. Join.

Sl st in next st, ch 2, hdc in next 4 sts, * (ch 3, sc in next ch-3 loop) 4 times; ch 3, skip 1 hdc, hdc in next 5 sts. Repeat from * around. Join.

Sl st in next st, ch 2, hdc in next 2 sts, * ch 3, skip next ch-3, sc in next loop, (ch 3, sc in next loop) twice; ch 3, skip next ch-3 and 1 hdc, hdc in next 3 sts. Repeat from * around. Join.

Sl st in next st, ch 7 (to count as hdc and ch 5), * skip next ch-3, sc in next loop, ch 3, sc in next loop, ch 5, skip next ch-3 and 1 hdc, hdc in next st, ch 5. Repeat from * around. Join with sl st in 2nd st of ch-7.

Ch 1, sc in sp, * ch 5, sc in ch-3 loop, ch 5, sc in sc last made, (ch 5, sc in same place) twice; ch 5, sc in each of next 2 sps. Repeat from * around. Join and fasten off. This completes 1 glass jacket.
