Hanky Case Pattern #4009
Filet-crochet hanky case worked from chart in size 50 mercerized crochet, blocked to 8½ x 16 inches, mounted on quilted satin and folded in half. Originally published in Spool Cotton #191, Gift Shopping with Crochet.

Pattern instructions
Case
Starting at bottom of chart, ch 156 to measure 9 inches.
1st row: Tr in 5th ch from hook and in each ch across (153 tr, counting turning ch as 1 tr). Ch 4, turn.
2nd row: Tr in 8 tr—2 bls over 2 bls; * (ch 1, skip 1 tr, tr in next tr) 4 times—2 shadow sps over 2 bls; tr in next 4 tr. Repeat from * 4 more times; 4 shadow sps, (1 bl, 2 shadow sps) 5 times; 2 bls. Ch 4, turn.
3rd row: 1 bl, * 1 shadow sp, (tr in next sp, tr in next tr) 4 times—2 bls over 2 shadow sps. Repeat from * 4 more times; 1 shadow sp, 4 bls, (1 shadow sp, 2 bls) 5 times; 1 shadow sp, 1 bl. Ch 4, turn.
4th row: 1 bl, 1 shadow sp, 2 bls, (ch 1, tr in next tr) twice—shadow sp over shadow sp. Make 29 more shadow sps, 2 bls, 1 shadow sp, 1 bl. Ch 4, turn.
5th row: 2 bls, 2 shadow sps, ch 3, skip 1 tr, tr in next tr—sp over shadow bl. Make 29 more sps, 2 shadow sps, 2 bls. Ch 4, turn.
6th row: (1 bl, 1 shadow sp) twice; ch 3, tr in next tr—sp over sp. Make 29 more sps, 2 shadow sps, 2 bls. Ch 4, turn.
Now follow chart until 36th row is completed:
37th row: 2 bls, 2 shadow sps, 17 sps, ch 1, tr in center st of ch-3 below, ch 1, tr in next tr—shadow sp made over sp; 12 sps, 2 shadow sps, 2 bls. Ch 4, turn.
Now follow chart until 43rd row is completed.
44th row: 2 bls, 2 shadow sps, 2 sps, 4 shadow sps, 2 sps, (3 tr in next sp, tr in next tr) twice—2 bls over 2 sps. Make 2 more bls, 4 shadow sps, 5 bls, 6 shadow sps, 3 sps, 2 shadow sps, 2 bls. Ch 4, turn.
Now follow chart until 46th row is completed.
47th row: 2 bls, 2 shadow sps, 2 sps, 4 shadow sps, 3 bls, ch 3, skip 3 tr, tr in next tr—sp over bl. Make 5 bls, 1 sp, 3 bls, 1 sp, 4 bls, 4 shadow sps, 2 sps, 2 shadow sps, 2 bls. Ch 4, turn.
Now follow chart to top. Fasten off. Block piece to measure 8½ x 16 inches.
Finishing
Cut 2 pieces of quilted satin, each ½ inch larger all around than crocheted piece. Place pieces with right sides facing and machine stitch around about ½ inch in from edges, leaving a 4-inch opening. Press seams flat, then turn right side out and sew opening together. Press flat. Tack crocheted piece to one side along edges. Fold piece in half.
