Homespun luncheon set with four place mats about 11 x 16 inches and a center mat about 14 x 36 inches in Dk. Ecru mesh with Skipper Blue border, fringe, and cross-stitch embroidery. Originally published in Spool Cotton #118, Doilies, Luncheon Sets and Table Runners.

Pattern instructions

Center Mat

Foundation

Center Mat. Starting at short side, with Dk. Ecru make a chain to measure about 20 inches, turn.

1st row

1st row: Sc in 3rd ch from hook, * ch 1, skip 1 ch, sc in next ch. Repeat from * across until row measures 14 inches. Cut off remaining chain.

2nd row

Ch 2, turn. 2nd row: Sc in 1st sc, * ch 1, skip ch-1, sc in next sc. Repeat from * across. Ch 2, turn.

Repeat rows

Repeat the last row until piece measures 36 inches. Break off.

Border

Attach Skipper Blue and make a row of sc, with ch-1 between each sc, all around edges; at corners, make 2 sc with ch-1 between.

Fringe

Fringe

Fringe. Cut 3 strands, each 3 inches long, of Dk. Ecru. Double these strands, forming a loop. Pull loop through ch-1 sp, and draw loose ends of fringe through this loop. Pull tight. Knot a fringe in each ch-1 sp all around. Trim evenly.

Embroidery

Embroidery

Embroidery. With Hunter's Green, make a double block of cross stitch in each corner, starting 1 inch in from edge and making a cross st over each sc. Then, with Skipper Blue, starting at center of double block, work a row of cross stitch across one side to center of double block at opposite side. Then, at center of this row, work a triangle, having lower point toward center of runner. Work other sides to correspond. Now, with Spanish Red, work a row of cross stitch on both sides of Skipper Blue, starting at corner of one block and working across to corresponding corner of block at opposite side. Work other sides to correspond.

Place Mats

Foundation

Place Mats (Make 4). Starting at long side, make a chain to measure about 20 inches. Work exactly as for center mat until row measures 16 inches. Cut off remaining chain.

Completion

Then work as for center mat until piece measures 11 inches. Break off. Complete place mat as for center mat.
