Luncheon set with large and small doilies in mesh and shell edging, worked in Star or Gem Mercerized Crochet Cotton. Originally published in Star #10, The Variety Book of Crochet.

Pattern instructions

Large Doily

Foundation

LARGE DOILY. Ch 23, join to form a ring, ch 5, 32 trc into ring with ch 1 between each trc.

2nd Row

2nd Row—Ch 8, 1 trc in each ch 1 with ch 3 between each trc.

3rd Row

3rd Row—Sl st to center of ch and work same as 2nd row having ch 5 between each trc.

4th Row

4th Row—Same as 3rd row having ch 7 between each trc.

5th Row

5th Row—Same as 4th row, having ch 9 between each trc.

6th Row

6th Row—Sl st to 2nd st of ch, ch 4, skip 1st, dc in next st, * ch 1, skip one st, dc in next st repeat from * once, ** ch 1, skip the last st of ch and the first st of next ch, dc in next st, * ch 1, skip one st, dc in next st, repeat from * twice then repeat from ** all around, ch 1, join in 3rd st of ch 4.

7th Row

7th Row—Ch 4, dc in next mesh, * ch 1, dc in next mesh, repeat from * 10 times, ** ch 3, dc in next mesh, * ch 1, dc in next mesh, repeat from * 11 times and repeat from ** all around.

8th Row

8th Row—Ch 4, dc in next mesh, ch 1, dc in next mesh, repeat from * 11 times, ** ch 3, dc in same space, * ch 1, dc in next mesh, repeat from * 12 times and repeat from ** all around.

Mesh rows

Work 13 more rows of meshes working dc with ch 3 between in each 3 ch mesh thus increasing a mesh in each section each row. Work 4 rows even.

Edge 1st Row

EDGE. 1st Row—* Work 9 sc over next 4 meshes, ch 7, skip 4 meshes, 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc in next mesh, ch 7, skip 4 meshes, and repeat from * all around.

Edge 2nd Row

2nd Row—1 sc in each of the center 7 sc, ch 8, 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc in center of shell, ch 8 and repeat from beginning all around.

Edge 3rd Row

3rd Row—1 sc in each of the center 5 sc, ch 9, shell in center of shell, ch 9 and repeat from beginning all around.

Edge 4th Row

4th Row—1 sc in each of the center 3 sc, ch 10, 12 dc in center of shell, ch 10 and repeat from beginning all around.

Edge 5th Row

5th Row—1 sc in center sc, ch 11, 1 dc in 2nd dc of shell, * ch 2, skip 1 dc, dc in next dc, repeat from * 4 times (5 open meshes). Ch 11 and repeat from beginning all around, ending row with sc.

Edge 6th Row

6th Row—Sl st to 6th ch, work a 5 dc cluster st in remaining 5 ch, * ch 4 and work a 5 dc cluster st with ch 4 between in each mesh and 1 cluster st over next ch 11, ch 6, work a cluster st over next ch 11, and repeat from * all around ending row with a cluster st over ch 11, ch 6, join in 1st cluster st made.

Edge 7th Row

7th Row—2 sc, ch 4, 2 sc in each 4 ch loop and 4 sc, ch 4, 4 sc over each 6 ch loop.

Small Doily

1st Row

SMALL DOILY. 1st Row—Ch 20, join to form a ring, ch 5 and work 26 trc into ring with ch 1 between each trc.

2nd, 3rd and 4th Rows

2nd, 3rd and 4th Rows—Same as 2nd, 3rd and 4th rows of large doily.

5th Row

5th Row—Ch 5, skip 1 st of ch, dc in next st, * ch 1, skip 1 st, dc in next st, repeat from *, ch 1, dc in trc, continue all around having 4 meshes between each trc.

6th Row

6th Row—Same as 7th row of large doily.

7th Row

7th Row—Same as 8th row of large doily.

Mesh rows

Work 7 more rows of meshes same as 7th row then work 2 rows even and finish with edge same as large doily.

Gem note

This set will be equally attractive made with "Gem" Mercerized Crochet Cotton size 20 or any of the finer sizes if desired.
