Matching two-color hat and round drawstring bag set in Steel Gray and Multicolor Aunt Lydia's Heavy Rug Yarn. The hat has a striped crown with back-loop sc rounds, turned brim, and twisted gray trimming; the bag features alternating back-loop sc rounds, trc beading, loop edging, and braided drawstrings. Pattern instructions

Crown

1st Round

CROWN: Starting at center with Steel Gray, ch 3, 6 sc in 2nd st from hook, drop Gray loop, always pull up along loop at end of each round to be picked up at beginning of following rounds, attach Multi-color in 1st sc of 1st round. Hereafter work in back loop only of each sc on every round.

2nd Round

2nd Round. 1 sc in same space, * 2 sc in next sc, sc in next sc, repeat from * all around, ending with 2 sc in last st, drop Multi-color, pick up Gray loop.

3rd Round

3rd Round. * 2 sc in next sc, sc in next sc, repeat from * all around, ending with 2 sc in last st, drop Gray, pick up Multi-color loop.

4th Round

4th Round. * 2 sc in next sc, sc in next sc, repeat from * all around, drop Multi-color, pick up Gray loop.

5th Round

5th Round. * 1 sc in each of the next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc, repeat from * all around drop Gray, pick up Multi-color loop.

Next 6 Rounds

Next 6 Rounds. Continue working in same manner alternating colors, increasing 7 sc evenly spaced on each round, not directly over increases of previous round (70 sc).

Next 5 Rounds

Next 5 Rounds. Work even alternating colors ending with the Multi-color round, sl st in last st, cut Multi-color yarn only.

Brim

Brim setup

BRIM: Pickup Gray loop, work 1 sc in each sc, do not join this or following rounds, place a marker at beginning of each round.

Next Round

Next Round. Sc in 1st sc, 2 sc in next sc, * sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc, repeat from * all around.

Next 7 Rounds

Next 7 Rounds. Work even in sc.

Next Round (decrease)

Next Round. ** 1 sc in next sc, decrease in next 2 sts (to decrease: * insert hook in next st, pull loop through, repeat from * once, yarn over and work off all loops at one time), repeat from ** all around.

Finishing

Work 1 round even, sl st in last st at end of round, cut yarn leaving a length for sewing. Turn brim under and sew last round to last Multi-color round on inside of hat.

Trimming

TRIMMING

TRIMMING: Cut 4 strands of Gray about 2 yards long. Twist tightly together. Double in half and let twist itself. Tack around crown as illustrated, leaving 1½ inches loose at each end. Trim evenly.

Bag

Setup

BAG With Steel Gray, ch 2, 8 sc in 2nd st from hook, do not join this or the following rounds, place a marker at beginning of each round. Hereafter work in back loop only of each sc in every round, drop Steel Gray loop, attach Multi-color in 1st sc of 1st round.

2nd Round

2nd Round. With Multi-color work 2 sc in each sc, drop Multi-color, pick up Gray loop.

3rd Round

3rd Round. * Sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc, repeat from * all around, drop Gray, pick up Multi-color loop.

4th Round

4th Round. * 2 sc in next sc, 1 sc in each of the next 2 sc, repeat from * all around, drop Multi-color, pick up Gray loop.

Next 6 Rounds

Next 6 Rounds. Continue working in same manner alternating colors and increasing 8 sc evenly spaced in each round, not directly over increases of previous round (80 sc).

Side rounds

Continue in same manner without increases until side measures 7 inches from last increased round, ending with Multicolor round, sl st in next 2 sts to even round, cut Multi-color yarn.

Beading

BEADING

BEADING: Working through both loops of sts, pick up Gray loop, sc in next sc, ch 5, skip 1 st, trc in next st, * ch 1, skip 1 st, trc in next st, repeat from * all around ending with ch 1, join in 4th st of ch 5.

Next Round

Next Round. Ch 1, sc in same space, then work 1 sc in each mesh and 1 sc in each trc, do not join this or following rounds. Working in back loop of sts work 3 rounds even, sl st in next 2 sts to even round.

Edging

EDGING

EDGING: * Ch 4, sl st in same st, 1 sc in each of the next 3 sc, sl st in next sc, repeat from * all around, join in sl st, cut yarn.

Draw String

DRAW STRING

DRAW STRING: With Gray crochet a chain about 30 inches long, sl st in 2nd st from hook, 1 sl st in each remaining st of ch, cut yarn. Work another string in same manner. Lace through beading, lacing over 1 trc and under next trc. Lace other string in same manner starting at opposite side. Knot ends together. Cut a cardboard or buckram circle to fit bottom of bag and insert in bag.
