GAUGE... Each motif measures 3½ inches square before blocking.

Starting at center, * ch 5, 2 tr in 5th ch from hook, holding back the last loop of each tr on hook; thread over and draw through all 3 loops on hook, ch 1 to fasten (a cluster made). Ch 4, sl st in tip of cluster (a p made), ch 4, sl st in base of cluster. Repeat from * 7 more times. Join with sl st to base of 1st cluster.

Ch 6, remove hook, place last ch-6 at back of work, insert hook in p at tip of 1st cluster and draw dropped loop through. Ch 3, 8 dc in same p (a shell made). Make 9 dc in p at tip of next 7 clusters. Join with sl st to 3rd ch of ch-3.

* Sc in next dc, (ch 4, skip 1 dc, sc in next dc) 3 times. Ch 1, skip last dc of this shell and 1 dc of next shell. Repeat from * around. Join last ch-1 to 1st sc made.

Sl st to center of next loop, sc in same loop, * ch 3, in next loop make (dc, ch 4, sl st in 4th ch from hook—a p made—ch 1) 3 times. Dc in same loop, ch 3, sc in next loop, ch 2, skip ch-1 sp, sc in next loop. Repeat from * around. Join last ch-2 to 1st sc made. Fasten off.

Attach thread and make sc in center p above one shell, * ch 12, dtr in center p above next shell, ch 15, dtr in same p (this is corner). Ch 12, sc in center p above next shell. Repeat from * around. Join to 1st sc.

Ch 6, skip 3 sts, dc in next st, (ch 3, skip 3 sts, dc in next st) 4 times. * Ch 3, tr in next st, ch 3, dc in next st—corner. (Ch 3, skip 3 sts, dc in next st) 10 times. Repeat from * around. Join last ch-3 to 3rd st of ch-6.

* In next sp make half dc and 2 dc. In next dc make tr, ch-4 p and tr. In next sp make 2 dc and half dc. Skip next dc. Repeat from * 2 more times. In tr make dc, 2 tr, p, 2 tr and dc (corner). In next sp make half dc, and 2 dc. In next dc make tr, p and tr. In next sp make 2 dc and half dc. Continue in this manner around, working other corners as for first corner. Join and fasten off.

Work first 6 rnds as for first motif. 7th rnd: * In next sp make half dc and 2 dc. In next dc make tr, ch-4 p and tr. In next sp make 2 dc and half dc; skip next dc. Repeat from * 2 more times. In tr make dc, 2 tr, ch 2, sl st in corner p of first motif, ch 2, 2 tr back in same place as last 2 tr on second motif. Continue as for 7th rnd of first motif, joining next 7 p's to adjacent p's of first motif as previous p was joined (no more joinings). Complete as for first motif.

Make 3 x 5 motifs, joining motifs as second was joined to first (where 4 corners meet, join 3rd and 4th corners to joining of other corners).

Make 4 x 8 motifs, joining as for place mats. Block pieces to measurements given.
