Large striped bag and matching change purse in Speed-Cro-Sheen and Cotton Rug Yarn with crown zipper, curled rug-yarn handles, and nested coin purse. Originally published in Coats & Clark's O.N.T. #302, Fashions in Quick Crochet.

Pattern instructions

Side Piece

Setup

SIDE PIECE ... Starting at bottom with Flamingo, make a chain 40 inches long. Join to first chain, being careful not to twist. Work over 6 strands of Rug Yarn throughout.

1st rnd

Ist rnd: Sc in each ch around. Join and break off (side of bag). Draw Rug Yarn in until rnd measures 20 inches.

2nd rnd

2nd rnd: Attach White to same place as sl st, ch 1, sc in each sc around. Join and break off. Fold piece in half and mark sc directly opposite joining.

3rd rnd

3rd rnd: Attach Blue Sparkle to same place as sl st, 2 sc in same place (inc made), sc in each sc to marked sc, 3 sc in marked sc (another inc made), sc in each remaining sc, ending with sc in same place as first 2 sc. Join and break off.

4th rnd

4th rnd: Attach Canary Yellow to same place as sl st, 2 sc in same place, sc in each sc around, making 3 sc in center sc of 3-sc group and ending with sc in same place as first 2 sc. Join and break off.

Continue pattern

Continue to work in pattern, repeating colors of first 4 rnds once more. Do not break off at end of last rnd, make 1 more Canary Yellow rnd, 1 Killarney, 2 Canary Yellow, then repeat colors of first 4 rnds 2 more times. Make 1 more rnd of Flamingo, do not break off Flamingo. Cut off Rug Yarn. Sl st in each st around. Join and break off.

Bottom

Setup

BOTTOM ... Starting at center with Flamingo, make a chain 15 inches long.

1st rnd

Ist rnd: Working over Rug Yarn, make 2 sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each ch across, 3 sc in last ch; draw Rug Yarn in to measure 7 inches; working along opposite side of starting chain make sc in each ch across, sc in same place as first 2 sc.

2nd and 3rd rnds

2nd and 3rd rnds: Sc in each sc, increasing 3 sc over each rounded end. Join. Cut off Rug Yarn.

4th rnd

4th rnd: Sl st in each st around. Join and break off. Sew Bottom in place.

Handle

Handle

HANDLE (Make 2) ... Cut 6 strands of Rug Yarn, each 24 inches long. With Killarney make a chain 48 inches long. Working tightly over Rug Yarn sc in 2nd ch from hook and each ch across. Break off. Sew handles to bag, curling ends as shown.

Change Purse

Setup

CHANGE PURSE ... Starting at bottom with Flamingo, make a chain 12 inches long.

1st rnd

Ist rnd: Working over Rug Yarn, make 2 sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each ch across, 3 sc in last ch, draw Rug Yarn in to measure 6 inches. Working along opposite side of starting chain make sc in each ch across, sc in same place as first 2 sc. Join.

Work sides

Work as for Large Bag without increasing until 10 rnds have been completed. Join and break off. Sew in zipper.

Chain loop

Attach Killarney to corner of change purse. Make a chain 6 inches long. Break off. Sew chain inside large bag.
