The Black and Gold Bag

Ch 20 to measure about 6 inches, 3 sc in 2nd st from hook, 1 sc in each of the next 17 sts of ch, 3 sc in last st, working on opposite side of ch, work 1 sc in each of the next 17 sts, do not join this or the following rounds, place a marker at beginning of each round.

2nd Round: 2 sc in each of the next 3 sc, 1 sc in each of the next 17 sc, 2 sc in each of the next 3 sc, 1 sc in each of the next 17 sc.

3rd Round: * Sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc, repeat from * twice, 1 sc in each of the next 18 sc, * 2 sc in next sc, 1 sc in next sc, repeat from * twice, 1 sc in each remaining st.

Next 3 Rounds: 1 sc in each sc on sides increasing 3 sc evenly spaced around each end in each round, sl st in next st after last round to even round, ch 1, turn.

7th Round: Working through back loop of sts only work same as 18th round of hat, join, ch 1, turn.

8th Round: Working through free loop of each st of 6th round work 1 sc in each st, do not join this or following rounds, place a marker at beginning of each round.

9th Round: Working through both loops of sts, work 1 sc in each sc. Repeat the last round until work measures 7 inches from 8th round, sl st in next st to even round.

Next Round: Same as 18th round of hat, cut yarn.

HANDLES: Ch 70, sl st in 2nd st from hook, 1 sl st in each remaining st of ch, cut yarn. Work 2 more strips in same manner. Tie or sew the 3 strips together about 1½ inches from end, make a braid leaving about 1½ inches free at other end. Tie or sew to hold together. Sew 2 coins or sequins on each end of each strip and sew in position on bag as illustrated on cover. Work another handle in same manner and sew to opposite side of bag. Finish with buckram and lining if desired.
