Make a chain 20 inches long (12 sts to 1 inch).

Dc in 4th ch from hook, dc in next 4 ch (6 dc in all counting turning ch as 1 dc), * ch 4, skip 3 ch, sc in next 5 ch, ch 4, skip 3 ch, dc in next 7 ch. Repeat from * 8 more times, ch 4, skip 3 ch, sc in next 5 ch, ch 4, skip 3 ch, dc in next 6 ch. Cut off remaining chain. Ch 3, turn.

Dc in next 5 dc, * ch 5, tr in center of 5-sc group, ch 5, dc in 1st dc of 7-dc group, (ch 1, skip 1 dc, dc in next dc) 5 times. Repeat from * across, ending with dc in last 5 dc, dc in top st of turning ch. Ch 3, turn.

Dc in next 5 dc, * ch 4, 2 sc under ch-5, sc in tr, 2 sc under next ch-5, ch 4, (dc in next dc, dc in next sp) 3 times, dc in next dc. Repeat from * across, ending with 6 dc, ch 3, turn.

Repeat 2nd and 3rd rows alternately until piece measures 9½ inches, ending with 3rd row. Then work a row of sc all around piece. Join, fasten off.

Make 52 motifs.

Starting at center, ch 4.

2 dc in 4th ch from hook, (ch 3, 3 dc in same place) 3 times, dc in top st of starting chain.

Sc in sp formed by the last dc, * ch 8, in next ch-3 sp make sc, ch 5 and sc. Repeat from * around, ending with ch 2, dc in 1st sc made.

Sc in loop just formed, * ch 3, in next ch-8 loop make 5 sc, ch 3 and 5 sc; ch 3, sc in next ch-5 loop. Repeat from * around, ending with ch-3, sl st in 1st sc.

Work as for 1st motif to 2nd rnd incl.

Sc in loop just formed, ch 3, 5 sc in next ch-8 loop, ch 1, sc in corresponding picot of 1st motif, ch 1, 5 sc in same loop on motif in work and complete rnd as for 1st motif (no more joinings).

Make 8 more motifs for one long side, joining each motif to previous one as 2nd was joined to 1st. Make and join 10 more motifs in the same manner for the opposite long side. Make and join 7 motifs for each short side. Sew corresponding strips of motifs to corresponding sides, leaving corners free. Now make 4 individual motifs (one for each corner), joining points of one side of each motif to points of adjacent side-motifs (see illustration). Make a strip of 8 motifs, joining the free points on one side of joining to corresponding points of 8 center motifs of one long side. Make a strip of 6 motifs and join to 6 center motifs of the 8-motif strip.

Make a chain 8 inches long (12 ch sts to an inch).

Dc in 4th ch from hook, dc in next 4 ch, * ch 4, skip 3 ch, sc in next 5 ch, ch 4, skip 3 ch, dc in next 7 ch. Repeat from * once more, ch 4, skip 3 ch, sc in next 5 ch, ch 4, skip 3 ch, dc in next 6 ch. Cut off remaining chain. Ch 3, turn.

Work as for Chair Back until piece measures 5½ inches. Now work a row of sc all around. Join and fasten off.

Make 21 motifs for each Arm Piece.

Join 4 motifs for each long side and 3 motifs for each short side leaving corners free. Now make 4 individual motifs for corners as before. Make a strip of 3 motifs and join to 3 center motifs of one short side (see illustration).
