Starting at center, ch 8, join with sl st to form ring.

15 sc in ring. Join with sl st.

Ch 5 (to count as tr), then make 2 tr in same place as sl st, holding back the last loop of each tr on hook; then thread over hook and draw through the 1st 2 loops, thread over and draw through remaining 2 loops, ch 1 to fasten (1 group st made); * ch 3, skip 1 sc, 3-tr group st in next sc, holding last loop of each tr on hook (4 loops on hook); then thread over and draw through 3 loops, thread over and draw through remaining 2 loops. Repeat from * around. Join with sl st to tip of 1st group st (8 group sts in rnd).

* Ch 7, sc at tip of next group st. Repeat from * around.

* 4 sc in loop, ch 4, sl st in 4th ch from hook (1 p made), 4 sc in same loop. Repeat from * around.

Fasten and break off. This completes one motif.

Make another motif, same as this through 3rd rnd incl.

4 sc in loop, ch 2, drop loop from hook and insert hook in p of first motif, ch 2, 4 sc in same loop of second motif. Work under next loop in same way, joining to adjacent p of first motif. Then complete second motif as for 4th rnd of first. Make 69 more motifs, joining motifs as in illustration to p's of adjacent motifs, as before.

Press motifs neatly. Place on top of linen. Baste in position and cut away excess linen ¼ inch out from basting. Make a narrow hem all around edges and sew motifs to linen at picots.

Make 35 motifs as before. Place together as in illustration and complete as for chair back.
