Cap

Crown

Starting at tip of crown, ch 2, turn. 1st rnd: 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook. Join with sl st. 2nd rnd: 2 sc in each sc around. Join. 3rd rnd: * Sc in 1st sc, 2 sc in next sc. Repeat from * around. Join. 4th rnd: * Sc in each of next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc. Repeat from * around. Join. 5th rnd: * Sc in each of next 3 sc, 2 sc in next sc. Repeat from * around. Repeat the last rnd, always having 1 s c more between each inc. in each rnd, until piece measures 5 inches in diameter.

Shell body

Then sl st in next st, ch 3, turn. Hereafter work is done in rows instead of rnds. 1st row: 4 dc in same place as sl st, * skip 2 sc, sc in next sc, skip 2 s c, 5 dc in next sc. Repeat from * across, ending row with sc and working to corresponding position at opposite side (the last side of hexagon forms neck edge). Ch 3, turn. 2nd row: 4 dc in 1st sc, * sc in 3rd dc of 5 dc-group, 5 dc in next sc. Repeat from * across, ending row with sc in turning ch-3. Ch 3, turn. Repeat 2nd row until piece measures 6½ inches from tip of crown, making 7 dc in each sc on the last row only. Do not break off, but continue in pattern all around neck edge.

Finishing

Run narrow ribbon through the 5th row from front edge, and around neck edge. Make a rosette at both ends of wide ribbon and sew one on each side of front at lower edge. Cut remaining ribbon in half for ties.
