Center Section
CENTER SECTION... Starting at bottom of filet section, make a 50-inch chain (13 ch sts to 1 inch). Chart for center section of bedspread below.
Ist row: Dc in 8th ch from hook, * ch 2, skip 2 ch, dc in next ch (2 sps made). Repeat from * until 175 sps in all are made. Cut off remaining chain. Ch 5, turn.
2nd row: Skip 2 ch of 1st sp, * dc in next dc, 2 dc in sp. Repeat from * across to within last sp, ch 2, skip 2 ch, dc in next ch (thus making 173 bls, with 1 sp at each end). Ch 5, turn.
3rd row: Dc in next dc and in each dc across to within last sp, ch 2, skip 2 ch, dc in next ch. Ch 5, turn.
4th row: Dc in next dc (sp made over sp). Dc in next 6 dc (these 7 dc form 2 bls). * Ch 2, skip 2 dc, dc in next dc (sp made over bl). Make 8 more sps, 3 more dc (these 4 dc form 1 bl). Repeat from * across, ending with 2 bls, 1 sp. Keep 1 sp at both ends of row for entire center section. Ch 5, turn.
Now follow chart from 5th row until 37 rows in all are made.
38th row: Work across to flower at center of chart, work 4 bls and 1 sp of flower as indicated in chart, ch 5, skip 2 sps, dc in next dc (thus making a bar over 2 sps). Work sp over next sp, 1 bar over next 2 sps, sp over next bl, 4 bls over next 4 bls, and follow chart to complete row.
On following row, work to within flower, make 2 bls of flower as indicated in chart, ch 5, dc in center ch of bar of previous row; 2 more dc in sp of bar, dc in dc, make 2 more bls, 1 more bar, 2 bls, and complete row as in chart.
Now follow chart until 66 rows in all are made.
67th row: Work across to within popcorn block at middle of chart; then work popcorn block (to be referred to as pc bl) as follows: In next sp make 5 dc, drop loop from hook, insert hook in 1st of these 5 dc, draw dropped loop through and ch 1 tightly; dc in next dc (this is right side of work). Now follow chart to complete row. Ch 5, turn.
68th row: Work across row to sp preceding pc bl, in next sp make a pc bl as on previous row, but insert hook into dc from back of work (this will push pc st to right side). Complete row.
Now follow chart to top, thus completing one half of center section.
Reverse chart, omit the last row and work back to the first row incl. to complete entire center section. Fasten off.
Outer Section
OUTER SECTION ... Ist rnd: Attach thread to center ch at corner of 1st sp made on center section, ch 3 (to count as dc), oc st in same corner sp, dc at base of next row; * sp over 5 sps, pc bl over next sp. Repeat from * to within corner sp; in corner sp make 1 pc bl, ch 5 and another pc bl (an increase). Continue thus around, ending with ch 5, join to top of 1st ch-3.
2nd rnd: Ch 5 (to count as dc and ch-2), dc in dc following pc st (thus making sp over pc bl), * pc bl over next sp, 3 sps, 1 pc bl, 1 sp. Repeat from * to within corner; inc. at corner as before. Continue thus around, ending with pc st, ch 5 and pc st in corner; join.
3rd rnd: Sp over sp and over pc bl, * 1 pc bl, 1 sp, 1 pc bl, 3 sps. Repeat from * around, increasing at corners as before and ending with ch 2, sl st in 3rd st of ch-5.
4th rnd: 3 sps, 1 pc bl, * 5 sps, 1 pc bl. Repeat from * around, increasing at corners as before; join.
5th rnd: 2 sps, * 1 pc bl, 1 sp, 1 pc bl, 3 sps. Repeat from * around, increasing at corners as before; join.
6th rnd: * 1 sp, 1 pc bl, 3 sps, 1 pc bl. Repeat from * around, increasing at corners as before and ending to keep pattern; join.
7th rnd: * 1 pc bl, 5 sps. Repeat from * around, increasing at corners as before; join. These 7 rnds complete the diamond pattern.
Repeat the 2nd to 7th rnds incl. of diamond pattern, beginning and ending as necessary to keep pattern, and always increasing at corners as before—until 12 patterns in all are made.
Work 3 more rnds in pattern.
Then work 3 rnds of sps all around, making (dc, ch 5 and dc) in center ch of corner on each rnd. Fasten off.
Fringe
FRINGE... Make fringe in each sp all around, as follows: Cut 8 strands, each 12 inches long. Double these strands, forming a loop. Pull loop through a sp, then draw loose ends through loop. Pull tight. When fringe is worked around all edges, trim evenly to 4 inches. Block bedspread to measurements given.
