Peasant Weave Edging Pattern #S-909

PLACE MAT (Make 4)... Cut a piece of linen 7 1/2 x 13 1/2 inches. Roll a 1/4-inch hem all around.

1st rnd: Attach Dk. Yellow to any corner, 3 sc in same corner, sc closely around, making 3 sc in each corner and having an uneven number of sc on each side (not counting the 3-sc groups at corners). Join.

2nd rnd: Sl st in next sc, in same sc make sc, ch 1 and sc; * ch 1, skip 1 sc, sc in next sc. Repeat from * across to 3-sc group at next corner; in center sc of next corner make sc, ch 1 and sc. Complete other sides and corners to correspond. Join and break off.

3rd rnd: Attach Black to ch-1 sp at corner, in same sp make sc, ch 1 and sc; * ch 1, sc in next sp. Repeat from * around, making sc, ch 1 and sc in ch-1 sp at each corner. Join.

4th rnd: Sl st in next sp, in same sp make sc, ch 1 and sc; * ch 1, sc in next sp. Repeat from * around, making sc, ch 1 and sc in each corner. Join and break off.

5th to 8th rnds incl: Repeat 3rd and 4th rnds alternately, making 2 rnds of Hunter's Green and 2 rnds of Spanish Red. The first to 8th rnds incl constitute stripe pattern. Continue to work in stripe pattern, repeating 3rd and 4th rnds alternately, until 20 rnds have been completed.

21st rnd: With Black, * sc in next 4 sc, ch 3, sl st in last sc. Repeat from * around. Break off. Block to measurements.

APRON... Cut a piece of linen 15 x 36 inches and make a rolled hem around 1 long and 2 short sides. Attach Dk. Yellow at top side edge and work exactly as for Place Mat around hemmed edges.

POCKET... Cut a piece of linen 4 inches square and hem all edges. Work in pattern across top edge only for 12 rows. Then work as for 21st rnd of Place Mat. Break off. Gather top edge of Apron to measure 14 1/2 inches. With remaining material make waistband and ties and sew in place. Sew pocket to Apron.
