Vespers Bedspread Pattern #655
Vintage Vespers bedspread with square blocks in J. & P. Coats Bedspread Cotton, sewn together and finished with fringe edging.

Block
BLOCK ... Starting at center, ch 8, join with sl st to form ring.
1st rnd: Ch 3, 23 dc in ring. Join with sl st in 3rd st of ch-3 first made.
2nd rnd: Sc in same place as sl st, * ch 5, skip 2 dc, sc in next dc. Repeat from * around. Join last ch-5 with sl st to first sc made.
3rd rnd: Sl st in next loop, ch 3, 2 dc in same loop, * ch 2; in next loop make 3 dc, ch 2, 5 dc (corner); ch 2, 3 dc in next ch-5 loop. Repeat from * around, ending with ch 2. Join with sl st to 3rd st of ch-3 first made.

Make necessary number of blocks, and sew together on wrong side with neat over-and-over stitches.
Fringe
FRINGE ... * Cut 10 strands, each 8 inches long. Double these strands, forming a loop. Pull loop through first sp, and draw loose ends through loop. Pull tight. Skip 1 sp. Repeat from * 3 more times, skip 1 sp, make a fringe in center of dc-block, skip 1 sp, and continue to make a fringe in every other sp across. Continue in this manner all around edges.
