Pattern instructions

Cap

Foundation

Starting at center of back, ch 2.

1st rnd

6 sc in 2nd ch from hook.

2nd rnd

2 sc in each sc around (12 sc).

3rd rnd

* Sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc. Repeat from * around (18 sc).

4th rnd

* Sc in next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc. Repeat from * around (24 sc).

Increase rnds

Continue thus, increasing 6 sc evenly on each rnd until there are 90 sc on the rnd and piece measures about 4½ inches in diameter.

Next rnd

Work 1 rnd without increasing.

1st row

Working in back loop only of sc's, make * sc in next sc, ch 1, skip next sc, yarn over, insert hook in next sc and pull loop through, (yarn over, insert hook in same sc and pull loop through) twice; yarn over and draw through all loops on hook (puff st made). Repeat from * until there are 26 puff sts, sc in next sc after last puff st. Remaining 11 sc are for back of neck. Ch 1, turn.

2nd row

Sc in 1st sc, * sc in 2 top loops of puff st, sc in ch-1 sp, sc in next sc. Repeat from * across (79 sc). Ch 1, turn.

3rd row

Working in both loops of sc's, work same as 1st row.

Repeat rows

Repeat 2nd and 3rd rows alternately until piece measures 4 inches from last rnd of back, ending with 2nd row. Ch 1, turn.

Edging

1st row

Sc in 1st sc, * skip next sc, 5 dc in next sc (shell made), skip next sc, sc in next sc. Repeat from * across. Ch 1, turn.

2nd row

Sl st in each st across. Break off.

Back neck shells

Work a row of shells (same as Edging) in remaining free loops of sc's of last rnd of back. Continue shells across back of neck, joining last shell with sl st in 1st sc. Ch 1, turn and work sl st in each st around. Break off.

Finishing

Cut the 1-inch ribbon in half and sew to Cap for ties. Using 1 yard for each rosette, make 2 rosettes of narrow ribbon and sew in place.

Mittens

Foundation

Starting at wrist, ch 33 to measure 5½ inches. Join with sl st to form ring.

1st rnd

Ch 1, sc in same place as sl st, sc in each ch around (33 sc).

2nd rnd

Sc in each sc around.

Repeat

Repeat 2nd rnd until piece measures 2½ inches.

Next rnd

Sc in each sc around, decreasing 4 sts evenly around — to dec 1 sc, work off 2 sc as 1 sc.

Following rnd

Sc in each sc around.

Repeat decrease rnds

Repeat last 2 rnds alternately (being careful decreases do not fall directly over each other) until 21 sc remain.

Next rnd

Work off 2 sc as 1 sc all around (11 sc). Break off, leaving an 8-inch length. Thread a needle with this length and run through remaining sts. Pull tight and darn in end on wrong side.

Cuff

1st rnd

With wrong side facing, attach yarn at wrist edge and work sc in base of each sc around (33 sc). Sl st in 1st sc. Ch 1, turn.

2nd rnd

Sc in same place as sl st, * ch 1, skip next sc, puff st in next sc, sc in next sc. Repeat from * around, ending with puff st in last sc, sl st in 1st sc. Ch 1, turn.

3rd rnd

Sc in same place as sl st, * sc in the 2 top loops of puff st, sc in ch-1 sp, sc in next sc. Repeat from * around (33 sc). Sl st in 1st sc. Ch 1, turn.

Repeat rnds

Repeat 2nd and 3rd rnds alternately until Cuff measures 1½ inches, ending with 3rd rnd. Ch 1, turn and work 2 rnds same as 1st and 2nd rows of Edging on Cap. Break off.

Finishing

Run ½ yard of narrow ribbon in and out around wrist. Make other mitten same as this.
