Checkerboard Set Pattern #S-625
Checkerboard motif set with place mat, hot plate mat, pot holder, and napkin holder sides in Speed-Cro-Sheen Killarney and White. Originally published in Coats & Clark's O.N.T. #307, New Quick Tricks to Crochet & Knit.
Materials
- Milwards Steel Crochet Hooks · No. 1 and No. 2/0 (double zero)
Pattern instructions
Place Mat Motif
Make 12 White and 12 Killarney.
Starting at center with No. 2/0 hook, ch 2.
4 sc in 2nd ch from hook. Hereafter pick up back loop only of each sc.
Make 3 sc in each sc around.
Sc in next sc, * 3 sc in next sc (corner), sc in next 2 sc. Repeat from * around.
Sc in each sc around, making 3 sc in center sc at each corner. At end of 7th rnd, sl st in next sc. Break off.
Sew 4 rows of 6 motifs neatly together in checkerboard pattern.
Place Mat Border
Attach Killarney to back loop of center sc at any corner, 3 sc in same place, sc closely around, making 3 sc in center sc of each corner.
Picking up both loops, sc in each sc around, making 3 sc in center sc at each corner.
Sl st in each sc around. Join and break off.
Hot Plate Mat
With No. 2/0 hook, make 5 White and 4 Killarney Motifs. Sew 3 rows of 3 motifs together as before, having a White Motif at each corner and one at center. Make another piece the same way.
Cut a piece of lining slightly smaller than mat and sew to one piece.
With wrong sides facing and working through both pieces, sc closely around, making 3 sc in each corner.
Sc in each sc around. Join and break off.
Pot Holder
With No. 2/0 hook, make 2 White and 2 Killarney Motifs. Sew 2 rows of 2 motifs together, alternating colors as before. Make another piece the same way. Complete as for Hot Plate Mat.
With Killarney, sc closely around bone ring. Sew in place.
Napkin Holder
With No. 1 hook, make 2 Killarney and 2 White Motifs. Sew 2 rows of 2 motifs together, alternating colors.
Work as for Place Mat until 2 rnds have been completed. Do not break off. Sl st in next sc.
Sc in same place as sl st, * ch 5, skip 3 sc, sc in next sc. Repeat from * around, ending with ch 2, dc in first sc.
* Ch 5, sc in next loop. Repeat from * around, ending with ch 5, sl st in top of dc. Break off.
With Killarney make a chain 20 inches long, draw through last rnd of loops. Slip on napkin holder and tie ends in place. Make another piece the same way for other side.
