Colonial Woven Placemat Pattern #7007
Set of three colonial woven mats (large, medium, and small) with shell edges, mesh centers, and multi-color darned yarn strands. Originally published in Star #70, Hot Plate Mats.

Pattern instructions
Large Mat
With White ch 15, 2 dc in 4th st from hook, 3 dc in next st of ch, 1 dc in each of the next 8 sts of ch, 3 dc in each of the next 2 sts of ch, working on opposite side of ch, 3 dc in next st, 1 dc in each of the next 8 sts, 3 dc in next st, join in 3rd st of ch.
* Ch 3, 2 dc in same space, sl st in next dc (slanted shell), repeat from * twice, * ch 3, 2 dc in same space, skip 1 dc, sl st in next dc, repeat from * once, * ch 3, 2 dc in same space, skip 2 dc, sl st in next st, repeat from * once, * ch 3, 2 dc in same space, skip 1 dc, sl st in next st, repeat from * once, repeat from beginning all around ending row with sl st in 1st st of ch.
* 3 dc in next sl st (shell), sl st in top of next slanted shell, repeat from * all around.
Sl st to center dc of next shell, * shell in next sl st, sl st in center dc of next shell, repeat from * all around.
Sl st to center of next shell, * 5 dc shell in next sl st, sl st in center dc of next shell, repeat from * twice, * 3 dc shell in next sl st, sl st in center dc of next shell, repeat from * 5 times, repeat from 1st * all around.
Ch 1, 3 sc in same space, * skip 1 dc of next shell, 1 sl st in each of the next 3 dc, skip 1 dc, 3 sc in next sl st, repeat from * twice, * sl st in center dc of next shell, 3 sc in next sl st, repeat from * 5 times, repeat from 1st * all around ending row to correspond.
Ch 5, skip 1 st, dc in next st, * ch 2, skip 1 st, dc in next st, repeat from * all around ending row with ch 2, join in 3rd st of ch (even number of meshes).
Sl st into mesh, ch 5, dc in next mesh, * ch 2, dc in next mesh, repeat from * all around ending row with ch 2, join in 3rd st of ch.
5 dc shell in next dc, sl st in next dc, repeat from beginning all around, break yarn. The pattern is darned in working over 1 dc and under the next dc. Reverse the over and under of every other strand of yarn.
1 strand Blue, 1 strand Yellow, 1 strand Green and 1 strand Black.
1 strand Black, 1 strand Green, 1 strand Blue, 1 strand Yellow, 1 strand Red and 1 strand Black.
Medium Mat
With White ch 11, 2 dc in 4th st from hook, 3 dc in next st of ch, 1 dc in each of the next 4 sts of ch, 3 dc in each of the next 2 sts of ch, working on opposite side of ch, 3 dc in next st, 1 dc in each of the next 4 sts, 3 dc in next st, join.
* Ch 3, 2 dc in same space, sl st in next dc, repeat from * once, * ch 3, 2 dc in same space, skip 1 dc, sl st in next dc, repeat from * once, ch 3, 2 dc in same space, skip 2 dc, sl st in next dc, * ch 3, 2 dc in same space, skip 1 dc, sl st in next dc, repeat from * once, repeat from beginning all around ending row with sl st in 3rd st of 1st shell.
Same as 3rd row of large mat.
Ch 1, 3 sc in same space, * sl st in center dc of next shell, 4 sc in next sl st, repeat from * 6 times, sl st in center dc of next shell, 3 sc in next sl st, * sl st in center dc of next shell, 4 dc in next sl st, repeat from * all around, join in 1st sc. Continue from the 7th row of large mat.
Small Mat
Work same as 1st 3 rows of Medium Mat. Omit the 4th, 5th and 6th rows, then work the remainder in same manner as large mat.
