Hexagon Mat Pattern #15

This mat is appropriate to use as a hot dish mat or on an occasional table.

Using J. & P. Coats Knit-Cro-Sheen and No. 4 crochet hook, make chain (ch) 5 and join with a slip stitch (sl st) to form a ring.

Then make 6 single crochet (sc) in ring. Use a piece of colored thread to mark the first single crochet so that you will know where your work started.

Make 2 single crochet (sc) in each stitch of preceding round (rnd). This makes 6 increases so that there are now 12 stitches (sts) instead of 6.

Mark the beginning stitch in this round. Now * make 1 single crochet (sc) in the next stitch (st); then, in the 2nd stitch make an increase (that is, 2 single crochet in the same stitch). Repeat from * around—that is, 1 single crochet in the next stitch and an increase in the following stitch, so that when the round is completed there will be 18 stitches (sts).

Mark the beginning stitch of this round. * Make 1 single crochet (sc) in each of the next 2 stitches. Then make an increase in the 3rd stitch. Repeat from * around. There will be 24 stitches when the round is completed.

Continue to work in this manner, having an additional stitch between each increase in each round, until the hexagon is as large as you desire.
