ATERIALS ... Choose one of the following threads in size 20, White or Ecru: Clark's O.N.T. Mercerized Crochet, 24 balls. J. & P. Coats Mercerized Crochet, 17 balls. J, & P. Coats Big Ball Best Six Cord Mercerized Crochet, 10 balls. Milward's steel crochet hook No. 12. ¥%4 yd. linen, 36 inches wide. GAUGE: 5 sps make 1 inch; 5 rows make 1 inch. When completed, tea cloth measures about 44 inches square.
Tablecloth
Starting at bottom of chart, make a chain about 72 inches long. Ist row: Dcin 4thch from hook, dcin each of next 2 ch (1 bl made); * ch 2, skip 2 ch, dc in each of next 4 ch (1 sp and 1bl made). Repeat from * 32 more times, dc in each of next 33 ch; (1sp, 1 bl) 14 times; dc in each of next 335 ch; (1sp, 1 bl) 14 times; dc in each of next 33 ch, (1 sp, 1 bl) 33 times. Cut off remaining chain. Ch 5, turn.
2nd row: Skip 2dc,dcinnextdc,*2dcinsp,dcineach of next 4 dc. Repeat from * across. Ch 3, turn.
3rd row: 2d cinsp, dcineachof nextl3dc(5bls);1sp, 4 bls, 1sp, 2 bls, 1sp, Abls,1sp, 2 bls; (1 sp, 1 bl) 23 times, 1] more bls, (1 sp, 1 bl) 14 times, 11 bls, (1 sp, 1 bl) 14 times, 12 bls, (1 sp, 1 bl) 23 times, I bl, 1sp, 4 bls, 1sp, 2 bls, 1sp, 4 bls, 1sp, 5 bls. Ch 5, turn. Hereafter follow chart, starting at 4th row from bottom and working to 49th row incl. Then work along to "A" on chart. Ch 3, turn, and continue to follow chart to top row. When top row has been completed, reverse the design by working back to "B" on chart. Break off. Attach thread at "A" on chart, at opposite side, and work to correspond, completing row "A." Do not break off, but ch 372 and complete row "A" at opposite side. Then follow chart to first row, working across chain. Fasten and break off.
Finishing
Place lace over edges of linen, so that inner edges forma square. Baste and sew in place with neat over-and-over stitches. Cut away excess linen on wrong side, allowing for Ya-inch hem. Hem neatly.
